Worth saving?

My husband and I drove from Phoenix Arizona to Spokane Washington to see his family and friends. While up here, we stopped to visit with his aunt. She lives out in the middle of nowhere on a farm. In the shed was this Apex dryer and in the spare house, was this Westinghouse washer. I asked her about them and she said I could have them. We were planning on renting a trailer to bring a couple of jukeboxes back with us, so I'll be bringing these too. The dryer is rusty and will be a bit difficult to remove from where it's at. Anyways, here are the pictures of them. I also added a picture of the view from their house. The next picture is of the farm, as your coming in from the road. The last picture is of her refrigerator in her garage, that she still uses. Avocado green Frigidaire.

Great finds! That Westy washer is definitely worth bringing home and the Apex is certainly a rare bird as well. Not sure you'll love it as a daily driver, but you'll probably have the only one known to exist. Thanks for sharing and keep us updated on the jukes as well! Take care and have a safe trip.

And if I were you, I would have stayed in Spokane -- Phoenix (and all of Arizona) is a dried up conservative bland and boring wasteland! All kidding aside, sort of, I hope you can save the Westy and the dryer. Very cool finds!

Westinghouse washer

The year of this Westinghouse washer is 1966. My grandmother had that exact same washer. It was rugged and had a big interior. My grandfather worked in construction plus ran a small farm at home. My granny was always washing his bib overalls and heavy coats in it with no trouble at all. However this Westinghouse washer was a water hog. The water levels were small, medium, regular, large, extra large and reset. The water levels were very narrow between settings. On medium the wash tub was almost 1/2 full of water. It lasted nearly 15 years until the seal in the transmission leaked out the oil. Seeing this machine really brings back a lot of memories!!!

Late 60s WH Top Load washer

Wow that really brings back memories to see that, hopefully it may still be in working condition. We saw a ton of these still working in the mid 70s but they seldom lasted very long with heavy use.

 

We always figured there were only two repairs that made economic sense to do on these washers, the inlet valve or the drive belt any thing else was just too expensive to repair even back in the 70s. Even a timer replacement cost over $100 in the early 70s because WH parts prices were about the most expensive in the industry as WH was trying to stay in the appliance business before they sold out to WCI in 1975.

 

Usually you would see a water pump seal failure that would take out the motor [ pump was assembled directly and on top of the motor ] or a transmission oil seal failure or other mechanical failure and unlike a GE FF the transmission was not easily replaceable.

Justin, those are great finds. The Apex dryer of course is rare and cool with the window. The Westinghouse top loader may be the earliest known WTL in any of our collections. I could be wrong but I'm not sure anyone else has one with the early black Bakelite agitator.

Nice find, Justin. I'm sure you can get that dryer looking good again.

The scenery there is beautiful; I've never been to the Pacific Northwest, but have always wanted to go. Have a good trip!

Went back to Steve's aunts for the washer and dryer. The shed the dryer was in has a very uneven floor. It was sitting on top of a wooden pedestal in the corner. Here are pictures of the shed it was in. It was still plugged in, although I doubt power was still to the shed. I also included a picture of both the machines in the trailer. Behind them are 2 jukeboxes.

I do, but between 4 TV sets, 2 jukeboxes, the Westinghouse washer and the Apex dryer, I had no more room in the trailer. Plus I already have a Maytag wringer from that era

Right now everything is on hold. We are in the middle of selling our other house. We had stuff stored there and it all got brought to our current house. Not to mention, around the first of the year I had to empty out the contents of a storage unit we had. Then add all this heat in the mix, it gets too hot in the garage to do anything, let alone move heavy stuff around.

Great find!

I said a week or so ago I thought that of the three similar dryers,  the original Speed Queen, Thor, and the Apex, the Apex had the window in the door and here it is. The control panel on the washer is like the control panel our LTF590 WH washer with the side swing door.
