direct drive washer i posted

i made the calculation with a calculator if you substract 2017-1993 year of the posted direct drive washer it brought the result 24 years old this means if my mom and i would not of had to replace or direct drive washer back in 2004 it would be 24 years today so i would say washers dating from 1993 are now considered vintage.

Kenmore/Whirlpool DD Spin Drain Late 80's?

My Kenmore Limited Edition washer was purchased new in September 1987 and it does not spin drain.
When did Whirlpool/Kenmore move from spin drain to neutral drain on DD washers?
Mine also has the single spray rinse as opposed to the 4 earlier models had.

Bill, hopefully DADoES will chime in here, but the early DD washers were spin drain.  There were problems and the machines were retrofitted (he's discussed this before).  My 1986 Lady Shredmor3e was neutral drain.  I think by 1984 or 1985, the small production of DD Kenmore models were all neutral drain.  Now mine did develop the tendency to spin drain until the transmission got warmed up around its 10th or 12th year.  Mine too had the single spray rinse on the post-rinse spin, except on PP which had a spin spray for both spins.  Friends of mine in Dallas got a Model 70 DD set in 1989 or 1990 and it had two sprays on each spin that the cycle design called for a spin spray.

Direct drives were available as limited-production 24" Kenmore models before they were sold under Whirlpool branding, possibly as early as 1981.

I have a original-issue (from Whirlpool training attended by the guys at the Whirlpool dealer where I worked for a few years) of service manual L-46 Design 2000 Direct Drive Washer dated 1981.  It references model LB5500XK, which is 1982.  I remember deliveries of that model.

Design 2000 Automatic Washers Diagnostic Update dated 1984 (does not reference neutral drain).

My grandmother had a 1984 Design 2000 model that spin-drained.  I always thought it was silly for running 2-mins of high spin/drain on Delicate & Perm Press, then switching to low spin.

L-52 Design 2000 Washer with Neutral Drain dated 1985.

Sure, to each

their own. They are out of production, so to me that's vintage. Not old, just vintage.
Vintage comes from wines, and is borrowed to collectable items.

Vintage WP Built DD Washers

WP DD Washers were available for sale by mid 1981, the fully restored one in our museum was built the 28th week of 1981.

WP built all the DD washers with neutral drain transmissions by 1985 after lots of consumer complaints about redeposited lint on clothing from spin draining. Some 1984 WP DD washers had the newer ND timers but still the the spin-drain transmissions when they left the factory, we ran into a few of these and we changed the transmissions to the better ND transmissions.

Keep in mind Whirlpool is still building DD washers with the sand cast transmissions, they are available in both the 24" and 27" Thin Twin stack washer-dryers, we sell about a 1/2 dozen every month. If WP keeps the DDs in production another 2 or 3 years they will have built the DD washer longer than their orignal belt drive machines and also built far more as well.

Hi,Bob from New Jersey. I have a Estate brand top load washer got in 1999, runs good.except on the first load it goes into a spin/drain on the first drain until the transmission warms up. this washer is still better than the new top load washers today.
