Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

very cool!

That's pretty smart engineering done there, to get the usability of a stacked set, but get to keep the good ol' CENTER-DIAL styling!

That sure is creative!
:o)

Neat concept!

I assume these are homemade brackets, not anything Maytag officially provided?

I wonder if they could have mounted the DE50 upside-down, to put the controls on the more convenient bottom edge?

this was known as the "Anywhere" dryer.....I think before the A50 washer came along..

it gave many people options of having a dryer, where normally you could not....granted not to handle a full size load from a washer, most likely split in half, but it would get you through in a pinch...

I think the best part was the handsome spokesman.....

.
So is what we are looking at how it can from the factory, or are those brackets holding up the dryer someone’s cleaver addition? If so they matched the paint well.[this post was last edited: 8/3/2019-09:41]

Just saw Mike Farrell on an episode of Mannix recently

Yes, he was rather good looking.....

Maytag sold a chrome stand (that one has been dying to lay hands on), for their Porta-Washer and matching dryer. IIRC Speed Queen and maybe a few others had such stands as well for their twin tub washers and matching dryers.

While clever, seemingly well designed and built, along with good paint job; that shelf is entirely after market by someone other than Maytag.

JohnL or RCDrew would know for sure if this was a factory option....

my first Kenmore portable set I got, normally would be the chrome rack, and the washer would roll out from underneath....

somehow from the catalog, I ordered the wrong one, and got a set-up similar to this that bolted to the washer, and the dryer sat on top.....when all complete, it converted my two separate units to look like a ThinTwin….

in any case, must be some sort of hidden magnet or clip to hold the lid open....

Luckily I didn’t have to look very far to find one of my old home remodeling books, or search hard through any of the pages to find this article on the appliance, (next to it is an article on central vacuuming) the mounting, and even the compact-sized and full-sized washers under it:

Learn something every day!

Dave, what year is your publication from?

John, do you remember how this system mounted to the washer? Could the washer top be lifted (a small amount) for servicing with the dryer attached, without pulling the whole assembly apart?

No, the magazine didn't seem to say what year it got published, but you'll notice the pedestals for mounting the dryers over each washer are both the chrome one, and the color-matching one to go with the appliances or appliance...
