I remember seeing these as a kid in Norman Ross in the late 80's but never saw one in anyone's home.

No, it's an Australian built Simpson, still with a proper steel drive gearbox.

Looks like a Fisher-Paykel

Seems like the last FP I looked into had a similar agitator, tub ring and plastic rear-hinged lid. Their tubs are ribbed horizonatllay, though.
