Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

That Kelvi fridge is what my parents had from 1948 until 1962 or 1963. It went into the garage. Kept it there until my parents sold the house in 2002. Tried to find a home for it, no one wanted it.

wringer collector here

I have 2 maytag wringers in my collection, E2L, N2L. Sorry I don't have any pictures of them, but both work great.
looking for a J2L to complete my maytag wringer collection.

Hi Don,

I enjoyed seeing you fantastic collection of washers. That Easy washer is spectacular as is the Dixie Queen! I only have an early Maytag wringer from the early 1920's and a Lady Kenmore 2 speed wringer for the late 50's/ early 60's. I don't think that I"ll be collecting washers, much, but I do love small appliances. I noticed a nice little toaster on YOUR table, Don!!

Thanks so much for sharing the pics!

Those are some really nice machines you have there! I never knew that they made wringers up until the early 80's! You haven't even used that 1983 model?
That Maytag TT you have is super clean! Thanks for posting those photos of your collection, I enjoyed every last photo!

Since I have never dealt with wringer washers or twin tubs, how were those units priced (new) compared to automatics?

Pete ... cool catalog pages! I love going through old catalogs. When I was a kid, you couldn't tear me away from the Sears catalog; I went straight to the washing machine pages!! Same thing with JC Penney's.

Allen ... The Model N (round) Maytag sold for around $400 when they discontinued it in November of 1983 and the Model E (square aluminum tub) sold for around $500 when it was discontinued at the same time. They were pretty spendy. The Maytag Porta-washer was about $200 and was discontinued in 1983 as well. I bought a brand new Porta-washer in 1979 when I got my first apartment for $189 on credit.

I have advertising literature from the late 1950's early 1960's that showed the Model N selling for about $140 and the Model E selling for over $200. The Model J was about $200 (mid-priced). I think the first Maytag automatics were around $300; pretty spendy for that time.

I wish I had pricing data on Maytag's automatics during the 1960's when they were coming out with the different levels of the Highlander and "Deluxe" automatics. That would be interesting to see the cost of the wringer compared to the automatic. I have a Maytag wringer brochure from the late 1960's that showed how the wringer could fit into women's lives who had "a whole lot of living to do." It was still a lot of work!!

Don ... thank you. As a matter of fact, all three "modern" wringers were brand new when I bought them; I was the first to put water in them.

The Model A was used up to about 15-20 years ago in a family's cabin. When I got it about 10 years ago, it was sitting on a dirt floor in a garage and was buried up to the motor plate in dirt and STILL kicked off when it was plugged in! I only did a paint job on her as the mechanics were still in really good condition and you can't find gaskets for these babies any more; you have to make them yourself.

I might take some more pictures this weekend using one. They really are good machines and operate smoothly and quietly.
