I have such a divirse population in the plant of ages size ect I thought it would be better to give all a gift card for $50.00 instead of buying something wrong for them. Before they left Thurday I gave them all a 50.00 gift card from Penny's . One thanked me 3 times and was thrilled. One took one look at it and gave it to a co worker. One said is that all we are getting? The rest acted like they were very offended and I had done them badly.. This morning the one that thanked me and seemed happy is working away with a smile on his face, the rest are pissed. And are angryly working. Would like your takes on all this please.

I can't believe anyone acted like that!!! You didn't have to give them anything AT ALL!!! I hope you don't mind me saying so....but the ones who complained are ungrateful, and therefore not deserving of your kindness. They will use the gift cards however, and you'll not hear a thing about it.

Sorry this happened. You are a kind fellow.

I was lucky this year in receiving a nice bonus from my boss- but with the economy and business the way it is, I didn't expect it, and am grateful. A friend from another large company got a turkey. I guess everyone in entitled to their own feelings.

Ingrates! I would be thrilled to get a $50 for JC Penney.

The only thing I can think of to remedy the "problem" (like getting a gift is a problem!) would be to just give them cash---a $50 bill, for instance. Then they can do with it what they please. It's not very personal, but your workers don't seem to care about that.

I did think about the cash

but there is 10 of them and 500.00 would have been a bit hard. 50.00 at pennys will actually buy something nice. and I can pay it off in a couple of mos. Most all of them are lower Wal Mart status anyway. Now not even so sure of that. The one that actually thanked me and is working his heart out this morn. with smile was my washman.

i agree with goatfarmer

i wouldn't give anyone a damn thing next year! and i think i'd have a little "company" chat with everyone this year! a lot of companies don't give anything! i worked for red lobster for 20 years and the last 10 or so we got nothing!

people are such idiots! no wonder i can't stand most of them!

There's no accounting for rude people. That said, I would take heart knowing you did a very nice thing for your people, and put it down to experience. After 15 years with a major grocery, I (actually each of us) receive a $10.00 gift card to said grocery for Christmas. We're all glad to get it, frankly, it's the thought that counts. Don't let this ruin your kind heart.

Lesson learned

I wish I could say that your experience was the exception, but I know it isn't. Your employees should be grateful, as was one, to receive anything! It is no longer an expectation to receive a bonus or gift at Christmas from the employer and to receive one, whether you like it or not, should make you feel special. I agree about the "company talk" later and pointing out that this came from your own pocket not the company. Maybe next year, to make a point, you should consider giving a box of detergent!

What a bunch of ungrateful sh**s. I never, ever get a bonus or anything extra at work. $50 is technically a large gift, if you ask me. Could it be that it was less then what was given to them previous years? I somehow doubt it, but it is a possibility.

If that is not the case, let them be pissy. I am sure they would never think about getting together and getting you anything. If Penny's does not suit them, then try wal-mart next year.

What you did was more generous than most managers do. Even with a still-down economy. You did a good thing....and at least your washman was grateful enough to make up for the rest of the ingrates. I would not put anymore thought into it.....

Next year give the wash man a gift and no one else.

$50.00 was above and beyond what most would do for people in that line of work, so they should be kissing your ass.

Hmmm . . .

Sounds like some of those employees needed the proverbial lumps of coal instead of nice and thoughtful $50 gift cards. It's really outrageous that they wouldn't all be pleased and thankful - I know I would be.

I would love to have received a $50.00 gift card for JCP. The company I worked for before Casey's gave me a $20.00 gift card for Wal-Mart, which I used to buy cat and dog food with. They didn't have to give us anything.

I'd be glad...

...To get anything. Those who complained are ungrateful.

Give those who complained a lump of coal next year. That'll teach them.

All I Can Say Is:

A fifty-dollar gift is a generous one to most people. Anyone not grateful for it has issues that no gift of any size could resolve.

I'm sorry your generosity was met with such rudeness. Please don't let it get you down.

Was this gift from your own pocket?

It seems that it was. $500.00 is a lot of money! The Christmas gift should have been from the company. I've read that gift cards are not always redeemed (lost of forgotten), and there is nothing like cash. Everyone likes it! Next year, I hope the company gives them cash. I am sure that you will always remember the one grateful employee and appreciate him. I hope you don't focus on the ingrates.

As I always say.... unfortunately, greed makes the world go

Lee, I have to echo a lot of others are saying here. It's also really unfortunate there are those (in the world) who always feel, regardless of how much, or how LITTLE they work, they ALWAYS should be given more.

I agree with Roger… make sure your (9 other) washmen understand those gift cards were NOT from the company, but instead were gifts from you, out of YOUR OWN pocket! You wanted them to know how much you really appreciate them and all their work!!

Question for you Lee, have you done this before, or has the company given holiday bonuses in the past?

If you choose to do this in the future, may I suggest a "generic" gift card, like perhaps an American Express, or Visa gift card? This way they could use it anywhere they want. This may ease their disrespect, rude and ungrateful behavior (is that a word?) in the future... IF you choose to do this again.

Seems...

...that people have let their manners slip in direct proportion to the economy...

I have to say, on reading this, that I have become quite offended for you.

I work in the Australian Commonwealth Public Service where we get nothing from our employer - the Federal Government - and buy each other a $10 Kris Kringle from a name out of a hat which is good fun normally.

HOWEVER, there is no need or requirement for our boss to buy anything....This year, as none of our team went to the Departments Christmas Party (there are over 6000 people work here) she managed to wangle the afternoon off for our section party rather than a couple of hours - we were thrilled....

On the 24th, the Public Service stops at 12.30 and closes until 4th Jan....that is written into our agreement, but sitting on each of our desks was a small 4x4x4 box from Jen filled with home made fudge....She does this every year and I personally love it....

For me, to have received a $50 card would have pretty much blown me away....

I think other posters are correct - You need to have a staff meeting and express your disappointment in them. They need to understand that this was from YOU and not from the firm.

AND

It really wouldn't hurt them to know that you're paying them off as you didn't have a 'loose' $500 lying around.....they'll realise very quickly that even though you may be their boss, you're not made of money...
