Dispenser door is missing. Are the dispenser doors still available, and how do i Tell if the release mechanism still works to dispense the detergent? I have been throwing Cascade Packs in at the beginning of the prewash on normal cycle, then again on the main wash cycle.

No need to do a double pack, just add one pack to the main wash only!
If you want to boost cleaning, add one or two ounces of LCB in the prewash phase.
The bleach will not kill the enzymes since two rinses follow most prewashes.

You have a work horse of a machine and parts should be available to fix dispenser drawer, nice find!
That's my dishwasher except...
Has light indicators for power on and water heating.
It's the built-in version.
You are gonna love how it cleans. I only use the normal or light washes and one of the Quantum tablets. (The power-tabs seem to foam way too much).
I even use Sunlight pods and they work well too.
My water is on the soft side.
Enjoy your machine. Mine is 17 or 18 years old.
(I do need new racks however)

these are some of the best machines around.....that UltraWash will clean anything, the FIRST time....
I have a Convertible 1988 model I got brand new, still running top dollar.....has the center tower and adjustable upper rack.....dispenser on the left
and I have a newer version convertible I got from Habitat for 40.00, as a backup should this one ever fail......no center tower or adjustable rack, dispenser on the right like yours.........bad thing is I am gonna need new racks, the tips are rusting away....

As mentioned earlier, you only need to use a one pack per load. Until you get the dispenser fixed, just wait until the main wash starts then drop a detergent pack into the machine. You've got yourself a workhorse there and it will do a great job of cleaning your dirty dishes. Even cleans baked and dried on messes. I used the normal cycle with the temp boost. (my landlord kept the HW temp on the low side)
Use to have an ultra wash in my old apartment and miss having that machine.
You can load it to the gills and not have a worry. Just make sure that the washarm that's on the bottom of the upper rack rotates freely once the bottom rack is in the DW and don't cover the center tower in the lower rack.

One Pack Of Detergent ?
I agree that one pack in the main wash is essential to great washing, BUT I always put one or two tablespoons of regular DW detergent in the open cup, enzyme detergents are best for this purpose, it is not really a good idea to run a DW with dirty dishes with NO detergent in the first wash, this is a great way to clog your plumbing with grease if nothing else.

That's a really nice machine you will love it. One of the best designs for dishwashers ever. One could put a Chinese buffet inside and have everything be spotless after words, plus you have real thermal holds.

DW detergent & Packs not a good move 4 sensitive noses
I've done this and dishes comes out with a weird odor chemical reaction to different type powder/pack usage.
Try for yourself and determine what is right with your washing preference.
I promote using 1-2 ounces of LCB to stem off fish swamp smells in glasses after cycle completes.
My water is on well and water softener, so this with packs or detergent leaves a funky musk smell that bleach eliminates when cycle is completed!
