Hi everyone!

I am trying to figure out the year that my old faithful was built. I read from this thread
http://www.automaticwasher.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-VIEWTHREAD.cgi?40894
that I use the second letter of the serial no to determine year by consulting the GE tables. I found the tables here:
http://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=16195
but I don't think they are accurate.

The first 2 letters of my serial number are GF. So according to the tables, my dishwasher is one of the following: 2015, 2003, 1991, 1979, 1949.

I don't think it is 1949 because photos I've seen of that year, the dishwasher was round. And 1979 does not seem possible because the photos I've seen from then are front loading. Mine is top loading and a rack is attached to the lid.

We'll be renovating our kitchen soon and this dishwasher will no longer fit in. I hate to take it to the dump since she still works. I'm hoping a collector or hipster will be interested but I thought I needed to know the year first.

Thanks ever so much for any help you can provide. I've attached some photos.

Canadian Date Codes strike again!

Your dishwasher looks like it was built in Canada (in my hometown of Montreal probably!) and that being the case, the date codes in the model and serial numbers you have found will not apply. I have very little literature on the Canadian-built GE dishwashers, too. BUT based on it's resemblance to this one of mine, I'd guess it's a 1970 or 1971 model!

Yes you are right--it does say built in Montreal Quebec!
Go figure us unruly Canadians not following GE guidelines!

Mine does look similar to yours.

Thanks for solving my confusion!

Yeah, but that's what makes us special! LOL

Glad I could be of help - if I was on the West Coast, I'd be interested in yours to keep up the 'CanCon' in my dishwasher collection. I only have 3 dishwashers that were made in Canada (one of which is a GE Mobile Maid)...

Yeah, and yours has the Krusty-the-Clown-shoe wash arm just like Paul's. If this were a US model, I'd say it's a 1969 model because by 1970, all that beautiful dark and light blue Plastisol had been changed to "Celery" and "Avocado". Is it LOUD???????

Crusty the Clown Wash Arm...

Love it Ken.  Just Love it.

That's practically the same wash arm if not the same that Hotpoints used.

I never liked when the manufactures started using the round holes instead of the "thought out" shaped nozzles.

Visually to me, it just looks like a "Cheap-Let's cut some corners" design. Yeah, they work but it looks to me like they took a well thought out idea and just cheapened it. And then there is that noisy whining motor.

That beautiful coppertone GE portable was one of many things I tried to steal from Paul last week. Would have gotten away with it if Paul and Phil weren't such &^$@!!  early-risers.

I don't know about Hotpoints made after 1970, but in my experience, the Hotpoint Front-Loading dishwashers were always better in quality and performance than the GE FL's. Seems that the Hotpoint Top Loaders were always GE clones. As they got closer to being assimilated by GE the Taylor Avenue design Hotpoint lost their distinctiveness, but they always seemed ahead of GE up until then. Quality was another issue: the ones I knew didn't last for very long but the families we knew that had them were happy with them. They were easy to load and unload, reasonably quiet for their time and had useful cycles and features.
