I'm happy to report, my sister has reconsidered. The Ultramatic will go to a new home. YEA! Turns out a porter in my building knows how to convert an LP range to natural gas. However, I WILL still switch this Caloric's light panel with mine.
I feel so much better, it was killing me to take this one apart.

Finally getting around to this Caloric...
I opened up the back. I still can't see why the original plug was taped up and a new wire and plug were wired up only to the oven light. I don't see any evidence of a short anywhere yet. Pretty spartan back there compared to my kitchens Ultramatic.

I decided NOT to use my buildings' maintenance guy to do the LP to natural gas conversion. I'd rather have a professional do it since, if done wrong, it could be deadly.
The electric clock/timer work just fine!
And so does the panel light!
Love how the cook light also illuminates from behind the console numbers and letters.
Since everything works as it should, the only reason I can think of is that somehow the knobs for the oven and panel lights were lost. Then someone just bypassed the panel and wired up the oven light directly to a plug. Talk about doing something half assed.
On a brighter note (no pun intended), I found a qualified repair man to convert the Caloric from LPG to natural gas.
What have we here? The valve for the automatic burner was disconnected and a regular valve was put in it's place. Looks fairly recent. So now the question is; Was granny fed up with the automatic burner? Or was the valve defective?

After drilling out two rusted bolts, I finally got the top off. Dusty and a bit grimy, but in remarkably good condition.
Looking spiffy.
I am not 100% certain, but it seems like the nipple was broken off the the automatic burner valve. If so, that's that.
