ELKAY, which had some beautiful styling, offered sinks and faucets with many features, including the most beautiful chrome swivel aerator I have ever seen and drain controls on the deck. They had a sink deck mounted streamline chrome fluorescent fixture on pedestals that was very dramatic, but was, as experience has taught, just one more shiny metal thing to keep wiped dry from splashed water.

That's an interesting unit, and based on the handle design and clock style, I'd place it between 1953-57. It looks to be the 54" size. I agree the faucet placement looks rather awkward, but it would be easy to fill large containers there. As for electrical safety, as long as the wiring was updated and properly grounded, it would be no more of a hazard than a disposer. The cover over the light must be missing; shouldn't be too hard to make one for it from glass or plastic.

I well remember the Elkay sink with the fluorescent light that Tomturbomatic mentions. One of my classmates in elementary school had a party at their house when we were in 6th grade, and their kitchen had that sink. It also had Frigidaire built-in appliances in Turquoise. His dad was a builder, and everything in the place was TOL.

The high school I attended had Elkay sinks and faucets in the home ec and art rooms, including the fancy aerator. The art room had custom deep single sinks, placed back to back integral with the stainless countertop. I'm sure it wasn't cheap at that time, and would be outrageously expensive now. Not sure if Elkay still makes the swivel aerator you speak of, but they do offer a nice one on some of their faucets. The deck mount control drain is item LK94 and lists at $288 each.

Fortunately, the parts distributor for Thermador back in the early 80s was also an ELKAY distributor. One day when I was in there picking up parts, I bought that aerator for my tall Delta Waterfall faucet. I had two faucets on my sink: a regular Delta for the portable dishwashers and the tall one for washing and rinsing large pots and pans. While the Waterfall faucet was tall, it did not extend very far forward, making rinsing large things a bit awkward. The ELKAY aerator fixed that problem. I took it with me when I moved.

Tom, I wonder how many classes in schools had a boy who checked out the appliances at parties. I always did. Even if it was closed off from the party circulation, volunteering to help with food distribution or cleanup would get me within close enough proximity that if I moved slowly and made it look like I was being careful with things, I would have time to eyeball the equipment. If something was especially interesting, a compliment to the mother was all it took to have a door opened or a feature explained. Then came the statement, "You are so helpful; you are going to make somebody a wonderful husband." Yeah, well, life put a spin we never anticipated on that.
