So... we're buying a house in Denver, moving from Central NY. The Whirlpool Duet there is already having hot-water filling issues (cold is ok) and it's a good excuse to replace it as we, outliers that we are, still prefer a TL so it would have been replaced anyhow.

The following 4 machines are potential replacements at around the same price (150-200), and would like your opinion as to:

Which would be best for regular use by 2 people considering:
- durability
- reliability/simplicity (all mechanical controls a must!)
- availability of parts
- design/cleaning ability

also approx date/age of each? ('80s to '90s?).

W1 Roper (WP era?)
W2 Hotpoint (GE)
W3 Whirlpool
W4 Maytag

We'd get a new SQ but... it's gotta be used, at least for now.
Price matters because having bought a 3rd house while keeping the existing ones for now, funds are tight right now...so we're looking for value!

What say ye? Which would you buy to use (hopefully well into the future).

I'm leaning towards one in particular, but let's hear your take!

I’d go for the Maytag. Direct drives are harsh on items and have issues with lint.

Filter Flos are good but use a bit more water, biggest reason I wouldn’t use one on a daily basis since the brake assembly can punch a hole through the transmission causing 2 quarts of oil to spill onto the floor making a big mess.

You'll have to explain your lifestyle a bit more.

Any pets?

Work/Hobbies include getting really dirty?

GE Filter Flo will use the most water (about 50 gallons a cycle without a second deep rinse). Good for cleaning extremely dirty clothes and pet hair. Probably the hardest of all washers to find someone to work on who knows their way around one. Parts are getting hard to find.

The DD's are easy to work on and find most parts (except timers). Just about anyone in the repair industry can work on it. They have the biggest capacity of the lineup. Make sure it neutral drains before spinning or you'll be pulling the trans and installing a neutral drain kit and possibly a new clutch. The internal filter is worthless. It'll probably be the harshest washer on fabrics.

The LA512 Maytag has solid reliability but is 40 years old. Easy to work on unless the trans needs to come out (still not that bad) and will keep churning away even in poor condition and under the worst conditions. Lint/hair filter works well for pets, fairly easy to get most parts and the 206230 timer is all over Ebay. This has the longest spray rinse of all machines if detergent allergies exist and rinsing is important.

That Maytag is in nice shape and you don't see them in Almond too often, then there is the cool factor.
The Hot Point looks like its seen some hard mileage. I'd hang on to the Duet for bulky items like comforters.

Which GE? The filter-flo or the plastic tub GE's?

I've had that happen to my older GE filter-flo and replaced with another GE which had a plastic tub.

I would go with the direct drive Whirlpool or the Roper(made by Whirlpool). They are the most dependable and very easy to fix if something goes wrong (if you are handy). I have a dd Whirlpool and it is super dependable and has a very large tub. But its all up to you.

Doug
How does yours do on really dirty clothes?

Hi Roger, I would fix the WP Duet and see how you like it, its an easy repair.
It is easy to replace the hot inlet valve, [ there is no such thing as minerals building up on the inlet screens, it is just a failing valve ]

Replace the washer later if you need too when you have more time to find something a little newer and better than the four you posted.

John L.

If I wasn't die-hard SQ, I'd jump at a Maytag set of that vintage. They don't have the biggest capacity, but are gentle on your clothes and can run for ages, they're built like a tank.

This is all great info, many thanks fellers!
For now I'm inclined to very temporarily stick with the Duet as John says, they are decent and shouldn't be a hard fix, but it will eventually be replaced as preference is for a TL, as mentioned, and may pick up the one I like shown and stick in the garage for now, good ones this vintage seem to be getting pretty hard to find and it's only 160$

I am leaning towards the WP, as we've had several WP DDs and never had a problem and finding parts is easier, mostly, though we never needed any repairs at camp and here. I do like the MT though also, seems clean. The WP is sold by a used appl dealer with a 120 day warranty so there's that, they must have gone thru it to some extent or at least no apparent issues surfaced.

We only have 1 cat, and no longer work on cars much. We sold our vintage '69 Cutlass and the wife's Mustang convert last summer in anticipation of the upcoming move. But I did give in to the vintage urge already as CO is full of solid old vehicles. On our last trip I did pick up a '75 GMC 2500 3/4 ton 2wd for dump runs and wood hauling. A 1 owner 62k mile Pueblo truck, so typical sunburn with almost no rust and not all beat up like many farm trucks, but lots of "patina", perfect for the intended use. Dry low humidity CO is like a candy store for old car nuts!

What would be your candidates to look for John?
I hate the white plastic panel crap you see in the last 15-20 years.
