Youtube is cutting off support for online utilities I use for converting lots of things into MP3 files that I can play most easily for personal use. If Youtube cuts off support for every other online conversion Web site, then no other choice but find (and maybe pay for) a compatible computer-based program for doing this sort of stuff. Glad I have collected soooo much listening pleasure: such as washer demos, commercials of all kinds (especially household cleaning and detergent ads), classic film clips, etc. I realize there are copyright issues involved here, but being totally blind, how would I know the converted Youtubes are copyrighted, especially audio files without visuals anyway?--Laundry Shark

Online Conversion Utilities

The issue I have is with online conversion utilities, not computer-based programs. No reasons were given for why Youtube has discontinued support for the following sites:

http://www.online-convert.com

http://www.zamzar.com

Hard telling how many other available online conversion sites will be affected. I think Youtube is overreacting and its security and copyright protection measures will never be fool proof anyway.--Laundry Shark

Youtube's reliance upon Flash keeps me from using it at all, as of 2 years ago when Adobe orphaned W98. And if they supported download of WMV or any standard format I could still use that. But they deliberately want you ON THE SITE to use the media, so that you're exposed to their advertising.

There are capture programs but I can't name one and youtube is probably working to sabotage them anyway.

I use a Firefox plugin name of Download Helper to save streaming video and audio.  It works with many streaming video and audio sources, not just YT.  Saves the file in .flv (flash video) or .mp3 or mp4 format.  A YT selection can be saved in a choice of resolution (240, 480, 720, 1080) as offered for the given clip, which may be different file formats.  I use VLC Media Player to play audio & video files, which can handle pretty much any file type, so I don't need to do any conversions.

Download Helper
Says it does support Linux and MacOS.

VLC Media Player by VideoLAN
VLC player is available for a wide range of operating systems.  Note that version 2.0.0 and 2.0.1 don't play smoothly on my computer for some reason that I haven't been able to solve, so I'm still using the slightly older 1.1.9 (which is available for download from VideoLAN's past version archive).

L'shark- they may want to increase dependence on their own downloader and converter, the YouTube Downloader (link for free version below). I've been using it for several years and it's been a charm! I can download a video from YT or other sites like FB, then click the convert tab and convert it to another format. I get a list of formats to choose from, or I can choose custom and set the parameters. Great when I want a version of a song that has a video, but I want the MP3 format for use on a CD or whatever.

There is an upgrade version available for purchase, but the free version has been fine for me. I can't download several files at once and download-then-conversion is a 2-step process (one step in the upgraded version).

Good luck,
Chuck
