It's actualy spelled differently but the folks all around have bumper stickers or the letters "YPO" stuck on their cars. The most dangerous, steapest road in the world is here,The speed limit is 10 MPH.If your going down and another vehicle is comming uphill, you need to pull over, come to a complete stop and, after the upclimbing vehicle passes you, continue on.You are recomended NOT to wear a seatbelt because,if your brakes fail you,you have to evacuate or die.

On the way there,we saw 3 different abandoned, rusty, old vehicals in different locations that evidently were driven off the road and rolled down into the dry lava rock and burst into flames.Another one we saw was in the valley and had rolled off the steap hill about three miles before it blew up and landed between two trees. One wonders what a horrible, deadly experience that must have been. That particular car looked like an accordian in between two palm trees.

Pete owns a great piece of land there that was,at the time he purchased it,not explored enough to know that it is a very special area. The King of Hawaii, as well as his entire family for four generations, lived there, played there and died there! Many trails were made and they all have different stories.Kamehameha was determined to keep Hawaii and go to the other islands to conquor the rulers there and take over each one.

As we got to the property,we had to park the truck and take a Kyak over to the houses Pete owns. There were 12 of us including two young children. One 7,the other 5.They rode with Gordon(our rower)a few cases of beer and me.As we were crossing the river, one of the kids moved so fast that the kyak tipped and into the water we went.I had a water proof backpack with thirty different cds in it and my wallet. All was saved and I swam across after diving down to get the beer and a chain saw that fell in.I also made sure the kids were o.k.They got back on the kiak and we met at the other side.
The sand there on a 3 mile long, private beach was black, sort of charcoal color and felt great to the feet. There was also a steap overlook that was newly formed rock mixed with lava that had come down decades ago during a severe volcanic eruption.John and I walked over and under and got some great photos. The waves were 20 to 30 feet high!We had some severe storms coming in from the east side of the valley that caused the high waves and strong undertoe. The crashing against the walls of the mountains and high splashing was spectacular!I love it here!

The access road to Waipio Valley is a goldmine for the BI's towing companies. More tourists get stuck on this road than anywhere else on the island (Mauna Kea summit road is #2), and the few towing companies charge a fortune to assist people in these two spots.

It's a 25% grade but the road is short, and isn't a problem as long as you read the signs posted at the top. But it's amazing the number of fools who try it without a 4WD vehicle, and wind up getting stuck.

Also, some beaches in Hawaii are very secluded, but by state law none of them are private.

It may not be "private" but nobody has complained or had any issues seeing us naked at this beach. Most of the time they either wave and go on or join us.We are currently in our winter and it DOES get cold here(51F last night)but the days are great and have been sunny.

That's it Whirlcool! It's a treacherous road.We actualy picked up 4 people coming up from the valey who were trying to help a couple that had gotten their Jeep stuck in the mud. We fortunately had the materials needed to pull them out and amung the 4 of us,we hooked their vehicle up to our Ford F250 Diesel 4 wheel drive and pulled them right out. The four folks helping them(trying to anyway the Jeep's rear right wheel was barely visible)needed a lift back up from the valley so we had them join us and ride along in the back with a beer and a doobee. One of the couples was visiting from New Zealand and had just been married.
