See my link at the bottom of a faithful old machine. A 1981 Zanussi S218T which has had nothing but a new door catch in its 25 yrs of life. This machine still is in daily use by the original owner.

Thanks for the pics, I love these old machines. I remember as a child the Appliance of Science adverts. I seem to remember an advert where a machine was breaking down and walking about and the suggestion was you should buy a Zanussi. What rpm was that machine?

Rob... It's an 800rpm machine (on delicates/synthetics this is 400 rpm.) It is super silent on spin even on 800 due to its induction motor and its incredibly stable.

Oh and until i get any further viewable media arranged, if you want any further info on how this old stager works then I have watched more or less all of its (18) programmes all the way through so i can describe its actions quite well....[maybe i should get out more....???]

i believe it to be very similar to my uncles old machine. that was still running when he decided to replace it for an intergrated *cringe* dipolomat-servis machine. i remember the fill well. i loved that machine! old zanussis rock!

i just love the fill on synthetics. starts off about 3 inches up the door (roughly where new machines come upto on high fill) and then once it gets to Wool, thats it!!! it fills in bursts until the entire space in the drum is full of water...and it continues to wash throughout this process which makes for a very splashy action. And this provides a very good cool down action especially if its been on White Nylon (60*c) it brings it right down to about 30*c. It then drains this vast amount of water in just over a minute. Excellent!

The cost is interesting though - it cost back then about the same price as the cheapest washer now - so it was flippin expensive - that's why they were better in them days. I also remember that machine well my mate had one. Remember the fill. Wasn't the 400 spin noisier than the 800? The 400 sort of whined, then it clicked on and just sort of silently glided up to 800?

Nick...re the spin, i think you have a point there, i can relate to that, fantastic longevity though, 25 yrs and all its had was a door catch and that was only because the owner is impatient and forceful hahaha, and she broke it. if she ever wishes to part with it she knows i want it though and i will take it off her hands with pleasure!

Zanussi - Electrolux have recently resurecected this tag line!. This machine is from the Washcraft series of models and was (I believe) an Electricity board exclusive???- I once reconditioned a Z918T and it was indeed the QUIETEST machine id ever heard!!!

the timer....
ive found to be one of the more noisy components, it makes you jump as it advances on with its loud click...probably the pump is starting to wear after all these years, even though it pumps out 100% it is quite noisy once its running clear of water.
