Oh, I find zucchini sliced into bite size chunks makes for a great stir fry... along with chicken, garlic, hot pepper, maybe a little ginger. Right now I'm still waiting for the garden to produce a surplus - got a late start planting this year. But in the past I've found it's also a good addition to various soups.

I know people get all fancy with baking zucchini into breads and cakes. But I really like it prepared simply: stir fried or just steamed al dente with butter and salt, over rice.

I have two friends with huge gardens and many, many, many zucchini plants. Every August, I am inundated with them. I wake up in the morning, there's a bag of them on the front step. They come to visit, more zucchini.

I've made quick bread, cake, muffins, cookies, casseroles, stuffed zucchini boats....you know the drill.

Here's my favorite recipe of all, especially good around the first of September.

ZUCCHINI RUMBLE
1. Take as many zucchini as you have on hand.
2. Turn on your garbage disposer.
3. Stuff them down, one at a time.
4. Order a pizza, and relax.

You Go Toggles

lol...

I think the b/f would love the "rumble". I love zucchini so I try to add it into our menus occasionaly - often I do ok, but sometimes he won't eat it. One of the few foods he can do with out.

And Toggs, I think your Idea is the most fun!

Rumble, lol.

But I wonder if perhaps a better use for excess food like that would be to take it to the local homeless shelter, food pantry, or soup kitchen. Heck, I bet even the local prison would welcome free fresh food like that.

And who know, you might make a new friend ;-)

Prison,

30 to life on tree like over grown zuchinni! Now there's a torture unleashed on the criminal mind. The whole charity and food bank piece isn't so easy as it sounds. Many locations won't accept anything homegrown or homemade as it must be inspected, prepared and stored in a health board approved facility. Most charitable food banks don't operate daily so it requires telelphone and windshield time to deliver. A zuchinni is water in a green glass requiring about 10 ingredients to make it palatable. Much easier to give money, it comes in any variety. I have grown jaded and angry trying to be a model citizen for good. It's not like that in the big city anymore. Better you should should turn the Dynaflow into a zuchinni mobile like the Oscar Meyer mobile and bring national awarness to needless legislation to protect the starving.

From what I understand, in many prisons even overgrown zucchini would represent a definite improvement in the food ingredients.

And frankly, the stuff shouldn't be allowed to get so big it's woody and unpalatable. Unless one is trying to get seeds for next year's planting, zucchini for the table should be picked at about six inches long.

The usual type of zucchini sold in markets is relatively bland. But there are wonderful varieties for the home garden - like Romanesco or Greyzini that have a delicious nutty taste and definitely aren't "water in a green glass".

Prison Cafeteria

There are such limitations to for donations acceptable to charitable meal and food bank operations its hard to know how to be a good steward. Would you give the contact numbers you have for making donations. It would be helpful to know times of drop off, prerequisites and quanities required to donate for the prison systems.
Thanks,

I and most other Italians I know have a built-in disgust for zucchini, because we had it shoved down our throats so much when we were kids. In fact I can't stand any kind of squash, probably thanks to these childhood experiences.

I love you grandpa, but please stop pushing those stupid vegetables on us.
