    Speaking of OLD furnaces

Hans, Any opinion on the best new gas fired units for baseboard hot water heating? The oil fired Thatcher in my Mom's house is great but if they ever extend the gas lines up the road I would convert simply to eliminate the in-ground oil tank liability issues and the high cost of fuel oil...

    Home heating rip offs..

original 1926 Thatcher My moms house has a Thatcher oil fired furnace with domestic hot water coil, about 1964 vintage. I upgraded it with a Becket AFG high speed burner and Tiger Loop five years ago and has been problem free since, aside from a new igniter which was a simple and cheap...

Washer $75 Dryer $75 (gas or electric) warrantied - $75 (manville, NJ)

Not sure if they are one in the same but there is also an appliance parts and service place in Manville. They were A-holes on the phone and in person, the store was a dump as well. Yes, they had the gas range igniter I needed, but their price was sky high; $75 for a $20 item.

    Advice needed, please

Another option is pick up a low mileage Whirlpool built Direct Drive TL on craigslist, they are plentiful and were manufactured under different brand names. A nice matching set could probably be had for the price of servicing your old machine. http://dayton.craigslist.org/app/4913762938.html

Maytag Dependable Care vs Amana (Raytheon) Washers and Dryers

$200 for a used Maytag DC pair would be on the very high end of what I would pay, unless they are something special, TOL and/or mint condition low mileage units with no dents, dings, chips, scratches, rust or excessive wear. As always don't be afraid to low ball, you can always raise the offer.

New SQ vs. Maytag DC vs. Whirlpool DD

Maytag DC, with a little adaptation of washing techniques, What kind of washing techniques??

    Maytag A712 Question

I'd grab them, $150 is a fair price especially since the dryer may need some work. If you come across an A712 in the future the control panel/wire harness could be swapped onto the A612 to keep the matching almond set intact.

    another Neptune bearing job...

rust that is forming on the base panel Keep us posted if you find the source of that leak. I have a Neptune 5500 that I picked up in the fall with the same interior base plate rust, primary on right side as viewed from the back, although your machine appears to have it worse. Perhaps from the...

Speed Queen - Are belts a common prob

The SQ belt change is a procedure compared to Dependable Care Maytags but certainly not a deal killer whether DIY or a service call and as Yogi mentioned the original drive belt can last 8+ years or more.

Speed Queen - Are belts a common prob

The drive belt wear is a very minor issue and an inexpensive repair even a novice DIY can do. I picked up 10 year old SQ TL for a friend a while back. She then ran it almost another year of heavy use on what appeared to be the original belt. I installed a new belt/idler pulley kit and its been...

Need advice for new washer purchase

A BOL belt drive Whirlpool built top loader would suffice I suppose. They still use a decent amount of water and are reliable despite the flimsy build quality, or so they say. However, if trouble free is important go with a top load BOL Speed Queen AW432 and their excellent warranty.
