    GE at our restore today

The Re-Store near me wouldn't have let anyone unload that machine at their dock. They wouldn't accept a flawless low mileage Kenmore Ultra Wash dishwasher a few years ago and I'm sure they've only become more picky since. PS Lawrence, thanks for validating my long ago blocking decision.

Best laundry detergent and/or additive for food and oil stains?

My go-to stain treatment is SoiLove. I discovered it at the 99c Only Store many years ago and would buy it by the gallon when they started offering it in that size instead of the smaller squeeze or spray bottles. Since those stores closed and the regular grocers that carry it only in the small...

Finally, a word of sanity about wash water temperatures

I use cold water rinses as a general rule, and wash cycles are either warm or hot. Tankless water heater is set to 135. I haven't measured the warm water temperature; I just feel it as it comes out the A712's flume. I have hot and cold supply valves set so that warm feels like somewhere in...

Over the range, microwave ovens, etc.

No fan of OTR nukers here. I'm stuck with one for the time being. There's so little clearance that I can't see into a pot on the back burner (the most BTUs) unless I open the door to the microwave and stick my head partly into its cavity.

Winter Tap Water Temperature Check Thread

61.9 Here. Most of the water supply around here is from groundwater recharge -- AKA percolation ponds -- with a smaller portion being runoff from the Santa Cruz mountains.

    Suicidal Poinsettias

Well, these two little guys seem to be bucking the trend. They've been outside since going into larger pots over a year ago (originally came in 3" or so pots). I think they may be a dwarf variety and have definitely been genetically modified for color, yet they are performing better than any...

Buying a new Toilet this weekend - Any advice?

I learned at our previous house that the flappers that come with the American Standard toilet model I installed in 2010 wouldn't give a proper flush. I replaced the flapper with a Korky brand and got a full flush. I immediately installed Korky flappers on both AS toilets in the current house...

Buying a new Toilet this weekend - Any advice?

When we reconfigured a bathroom at our previous house, I opted for a wall mounted toilet. If I could afford to do it, I'd switch to wall mounted in both bathrooms of my current home. Not only does it make mopping a breeze, but the open space below makes the room feel larger. I went with the...

    Whirlpool Duet any good?

That definitely looks like a newer pair than the 2007 Duet HT set we had and loved. It might even be a Duet "Sport" set. I think you'll love those machines as much as we loved ours. They were too big to fit in the laundry room of our next house, otherwise they would probably still be doing...

Buying a new Toilet this weekend - Any advice?

I've noticed newer toilets that use a different flush method which seems more reliable for hard water conditions. Instead of the many holes under the rim, there is one large square outlet at the back of the bowl that shoots a strong jet of water all the way around the bowl rim and the flushing...

Dryer doors that open top-down vs. side swing

The only downward opening dryer I've ever dealt with was my mom's '67 Snorge. The door could be opened completely flat against the lower panel so it wouldn't interfere with unloading. I don't know if this was common for other makes, but I don't think I'd want a downward opening door that...

    Consolette stereos: 1958-74...

Matt, that's a nice RCA Victor set. No surprise that it shared design treatments with my '62 JVC Delmonico stereo/phono. The original VOM phonograph required a total restoration job that I wasn't interested in doing, so I found a later VOM model that required little modification to install...

Western Holly oven & cooktop in pank: Rumored to be Vivian Vances.. Ontario Canada

I didn't read the verbiage but it strikes me as odd that, considering the vintage of these pieces, Vivian Vance would have had anything other than Westinghouse appliances unless she had a firm preference for gas, even for the oven. Back in 1986 Dave and I rented a home in a 1954 development...

1950's GE fridge compressor teardown and failure analysis...

Thanks for the explanation David. In the thread I started a while back about the Panasonic AC, one of the guys here who really knows electrical theory mentioned something similar to the "slip" effect you described, but it was a little too technical for me. I figured it was normal behavior...

1950's GE fridge compressor teardown and failure analysis...

Thanks for another informative post, David! I'm fairly certain that a similar issue took out my 1957 GE Combination a few years ago. I also noticed that when you tested both motors, even the good one produced a rhythmic sound when running, which is prominent when the compressor in my Panasonic...
