Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

The KD 23 style dishwashers use a drain check valve that screws into the pump assembly. It’s the same as a whirlpool power clean check valve.

It is not the same as a GE check valve that was for the older Hobart style machines. [ KD 21 & 22 models ]

If the check valve is sticking open on the 23 you will hear a sucking sound either at the air gap or the disposer, etc. depending on where your drain line is attached to the drain system in the house.

I’ve almost never seen problems with this style check valve. I’ve got a box of 50 of these things. I’ve been throwing them away but if you need one, let me know.

Your KitchenAid and the later whirlpool power clean, check valves had a little rubber seal in them. The older whirlpool check valves which are interchangeable use a plastic ball which gave less trouble, but it made a little clicking noise when it stopped draining, and they went to the rubber diaphragm because it was quieter.

Thanks John, something else to look into. My mom's same model ka has been in continuously since 1994 and has had zero issues. Mine is also a 1994 model but wasn't used at all for years and was still new when I got it so I'd be surprised if it were the check valve. I don't know. Maybe I'm losing it but I've just noticed more noise like it's pulling some air and I can confirm it is fully filled and not foaming. Puzzled

Hi Greg, you can try dumping an extra quart or two of water in the machine after it has filled and see if the sound changes

Also remove the lower wash arm and see if the gasket under the top cover of the pump assembly where it screwed to the main separator housing is coming loose, Sometimes the screws would loosen and You’d see the black rubber gasket pushing out that’ll definitely cause a lack of pressure for the upper washer.

Sometimes we used to see bad power clean pump assembly sometimes and I suspect there was something wrong with the separator housing. We couldn’t really put our finger on it. We just replaced the entire unit and it would solve the problem.
