Don't think there were ever any plastic gears. Combo52 can confirm. GE did change the upper transmission housing to plastic many years ago. Don't think it impacted performance. It improved servicing.

I think the agitator problem might be a symptom. Is your machine spinning while it is agitating? The direction of broken fins suggest that the machine spins clockwise. Keep us posted!
