    POD 9-27-14

I'll bet the fabric softener dispenser stayed clogged a lot. Also, how was the bleach dispensing controlled? I wonder how many colored loads accidentally got bleached because someone selected the wrong cycle or forgot to turn the bleach dispenser off.

    CO2 Detector Locations

I don't think it matters much... carbon monoxide is about the same density as air.

Remembering Service Stations of the Past

In northern Alabama, the brands I remember being most common were Shell, Amoco, Esso, Cities Service, Sinclair, and Phillips. Some of the Sinclairs in Florida had plastic injection-molding machines that would make a small dinosaur figure while you watched.

My electric service providers is ticking me off!!

It sounds like they reconnected retro's service in the wrong sequence... you have to reconnect the neutral first. Otherwise you get a "floating neutral" which causes overvoltage on 120V circuits.

    Landline and Mobile Telephones

After the 2011 tornado outbreak here, for the next 5-6 days the cell providers were sending trucks around to their cell sites to refuel the gensets. I've been told it was a near 24/7 job (they were having to go about 50 miles out of town to obtain fuel).

    Whirlpool's Miracle Gas Kitchen

Gotta give 'em props for the gas toaster.

Do you use a Rinse Aid?

bwoods, thanks... we are using Cascade Complete. Our kitchen plumbing is routed to facilitate the addition of a water softener, and we're thinking about it.

    What is this Refer madness?!?

Draws and drawers I used to kid my ex, who grew up in Brooklyn, this way: I'd point at a drawer and ask her, "What is that?" "A draw!" Then I'd show her a drinking straw, and ask, "What is this?" "A stwah!"

    Landline and Mobile Telephones

Here's my experience from living through the U.S. 2011 tornado outbreak and a five-day wide area power failure. In the first few hours right after the storms, the land like continued to work, while making cell calls was impossible due to heavy call volume and the fact that the system had taken...

What do you miss most about an old car...

I'm very late getting back to this thread, but I've since asked my father about the Riveria, and he claims that it did not have hidden headlights. So I must be remembering that from another car, although I can't imagine what... maybe a neighbor's car. The car I learned to drive on was my mom's...

Do you use a Rinse Aid?

We have pretty hard water, so if we don't use a rinse aid, it's Spot City. So we use rinse aid more for that than for actual drying, which the Bosch does fairly well as long as we open the door for a while after the cycle completes. (Curiously, this model of Bosch does not have a no-heat dry...

    What is this Refer madness?!?

When I was a child, there were a lot of elderly people who tended to refer to all refrigerators as Frigidaires.

    Family Dollar

In South Alabama, every place you see a Dollar General, you'll find a Family Dollar either next door or across the street, almost without exception. In North Alabama, although there are Family Dollars around, they don't tend to be Dollar General stalkers like they are in, say, Montgomery.

    My new old washer.

I'm not the expert, but I know that the direct-drive Whirlpool designs are mechanically pretty simple and easy to repair. About the only repairs that are common on them are the motor coupler and the Dual-Action agitator's ratchet mechanism, and both of these are pretty easy -- I've done them...

    Vintage kitchen renovation

I think the fluted glass would like quite striking with the first door style. And, this is just me, but I don't paint good wood. I stain it. Admittedly, stained cabinets are not that authentic to the 1930s, but with the right door style, I think it could work.

Are we aware of our knowledge?

Perhaps we should start a wiki. I'd suggest starting one at wikia.com; they host all kinds of wikis, and they let the wiki owner set their own editing and editorial policies.

    HOH parts

If you use the right kind of capacitor (film or polyester), they are non-polarized so it doesn't matter which way you connect them. Don't get an electrolytic capacitor.

    Memories on coin-op dry-cleaning

That's right, they were dark inside and it was hard to see what was going on. I was always kind of disappointed that it didn't spray the solvent into the tub where you could see it -- I think there was only one fill/drain line, so it filled from the bottom. The glass got really warm during the...
