Pulled up stakes and left Hudson, MA. I wasn't surprised. They didn't have much of a draw. Their prices were not competitive with Target, Walmart or even the area supermarkets. I thought of this when I saw the Tide post. I just drove by where they were located yesterday evening and they were not there. Just the outline of where their sign was.

Dollar Tree has made an offer of $8.5 billion to buy out Family Dollar, and Dollar General counter offered with $9 billion which Family Dollar's board rejected. The reason being, the lesser offer is more likely to get the go ahead from anti-trust regulators.

In the oldfolks home, everybody knows that the CHAIN 'dollar' stores really mean FIVE dollars. The independents meanwhile, still actually sell stuff for ONE dollar.
Once a bunch of highfalutin executives in manogamy offices get ahold of something, there goes the value for the enduser.
I stop by Family Dollar occasionally for something Kroger doesn't sell (say, a bathmat) because 1) it's on the way to Kroger and 2) it's NOT walmart. But more diligence finding a 'real dollar' store saves much.

The Family Dollar near me is not well kept. Floor tiles are coming up, and parking lot has holes and is always messy. I only buy bottled water & candy there.

Family Dollar is growing here. They just opened three new stand alone stores last month. I am sure with the Dollar Tree/Dollar General pursuits they will be changing soon.
Funny though cause it looked like Dollar Tree was circling the drain around ICT. Very little stock on the shelves, many outs of regular items. VERY unfriendly staff at most stores.

In South Alabama, every place you see a Dollar General, you'll find a Family Dollar either next door or across the street, almost without exception. In North Alabama, although there are Family Dollars around, they don't tend to be Dollar General stalkers like they are in, say, Montgomery.

A few years ago they tweaked the price on everything to $0.99999, but that's the most you'll pay for anything. I haven't been inside a Dollar Tree since the 99c Only store opened near me. We don't have Dollar General or Family Dollar here.
