The symptoms you are describing are classic gas valve coils on the way out the door. Change those bad boys and your troubles should stop. RCD

You can fill it with a garden hose. Just start the washer as normal and it will of course try to fill. Fill it with a garden hose until it satisfies the water level control and it will start to wash. You, of course, can also put a 'Y' connector on your garden hose and attach the two fill hoses...

Removing the agitator... Look along the base of the agitator. The 'newer' agitators have a 1/4" set screw. The older ones pop on and off. RCD
