    GE - CL finds

Phil: Keyboard ranges were offered in both 40 and 30-inch widths. The 30-incher (called the Spacemaker 30) had every feature of the 40-incher save two: It lacked a second 8-inch burner and the small second oven. Aside from those two things, you got everything the 40-incher boasted...

    GE - CL finds

Phil: The console on a keyboard range is insanely complicated, composed of stampings and castings, plus wiring and switches galore. Costing one out would be the perfect murder of a bean-counter, because nowadays, those guys would take one look at the figures and have a brain hemorrhage.

    GE - CL finds

Phil: That's basically the same range you showed, just Turquoise instead of White. The color certainly amps up the glamour! By the way, if anyone thinks today's appliances are expensive, take a look at the price some shopper noted on the above brochure photo - $539.95. That translates to...

Phil: The only glass on the panel of that range is on the faces of the clock and the electric meat thermometer dial, BUT.... Below the control panel's console, between the pedestals that support it, is what GE called a "backsplasher," a piece of ribbed, translucent glass. It allowed wall...

    GE - CL finds

Be Still, My Heart! That 40-inch GE keyboard range is incredible! Overall, very nice condition, and having the meat probe present is a real plus. No mention of the griddle, but they're replaceable. Even the sensor for the Automatic Calrod is there. Amazing what shows up, huh?

Vintrage Stoves or Wall Ovens - CL finds

Kenmore in #52: "what, does it blow up when you get it home and plug it in?" Since it's a WCI-built Kenmore, I would not guarantee that it would fall to the ground if you heaved it out of a second-story window.

    GE - CL finds

Sorry, Phil: But that 40-incher in Reply #55 is Harvest, not Yellow. The easy way to tell Harvest from Yellow is to look at the edges of the oven door and the front of the storage drawer. On Harvest, these edges will be "shaded," meaning that an area at the edge will be sprayed with a...

    What Was in Jacksonville?

I've had two people contact me to ask what was such a big hairy deal in Jacksonville, so here 'tis: It was a West Bend "This 'n That" canister, the largest size West Bend made. It was an optional accessory, not part of the basic set of four canisters (flour, sugar, coffee and tea). It's...

    P&G is at it again

That's All Very Well, But.... I would be willing to bet that the unserved consumers - men and women - who would prefer not to smell like a budget-priced lady of the evening are a sizable market. It seems to me that conditions are ripe for someone with some savvy to create a detergent with a...

    P&G is at it again

Tilting at Windmills: I admire your resolve to communicate your displeasure to P & G, but it's obvious to me that stinkimus maximus is so deeply ingrained into their corporate culture that they don't know any other way to do things. It has reached the point where I not only don't purchase P...

    Any percolator fans out there?

Stan: That coffee pot would be a little hard to date. The reason is that it's enamelware, which was an "economy" choice in cookware for many, many years. Many enamelware brands were made unchanged for decades; there was no reason to change them, since they sold steadily no matter what...

Yup! It's the calcium in eggshells that tones down the acidity of coffee and makes the brew seem smoother. Much like a calcium antacid (Tums).

    Any Jacksonville, FL Members?

Hi: There is a Craiglist item in Jacksonville I'd like to buy, and I'm wondering if we have any members there. It's a household item that is the last piece of a set I'm trying to put together. My experience with CL is that people don't respond when someone out of their area emails them and...

    GE - CL finds

GE in Reply #44: That is to die for! Exactly the 40-incher I'd want, if I had room for one. Don't get me wrong, a good 30-inch range is a great thing to have, but for those of us who grew up with the Big Kahuna, there's nothing like having all that cooktop real estate, plus two ovens. This...

Not Old! "I don't like to think things from the mid-1970s are old!" I agree completely - things from that time are not old. Including me!

PhilR When you say a "newer" Superfast, do you mean an American-made one, or one made in China? If it's Chinese, keep an eye out for one of the American-made units. The Chinese copy sold under the Farberware name in recent years is not known for the same longevity that older American-made...

P&G sells soap brands to Unilever

Andi: Cashmere Bouquet is also still around, but hard to find. I have a few bars in my stash. When Cashmere Bouquet was easier to get, I used to keep Palmolive in the tub's soap dish, and Cashmere Bouquet at the sink for hand washing. Cashmere Bouquet leaves hands smelling very nice. It...
