My GE Toast-R-Oven shorted out. Can it be fixed?

Thanks for the input Because of the age of the unit and the turmoil at GE, I was doubtful that an off the shelf replacement was available. I have some projects to do today, but I should be able to at least take the unit apart this week. I'm anxious to keep this style of toaster oven. I've had...

    best for removing body oil

Ammonia I sleep in shorts... with a big, hairy, oily dog, so my sheets get changed frequently and washed often. I found that adding ammonia to the wash and cutting back on the detergent (I use powdered Tide) worked wonders at getting the sheets clean and eliminating a lingering "not clean"...

My GE Toast-R-Oven shorted out. Can it be fixed?

I have a late 60s, early 70s GE Toast-R-Oven with the pop-up "Flair" style door. I was toasting the other day when a BRIGHT light came out of the door glass and I saw that there was a dead short between the top front heating rod and the metal cabinet. I unplugged it right away and found that...

    How to clean/deodorize filthy ashtrays?

I don't smoke, but my Dad does. He also doesn't clean the ashtrays out too often, and when he does, just dumping the butts is good enough... I now have several ash trays that are coal black and smell ferocious. (He smokes out side, so that's a plus.) Does anybody have a cleaning product in...

Does anyone still use a clothesline?

I was using a clothes line up to 9 years ago when I moved. There are a pair of steel "T" frames in the back yard of the new house and I've already purchased laundry line to thread between them. Frankly, I miss the smell and stiffness of towels dried in the sun - also line-dried bedding. Since I...

    De-linting a 1976 Sears Dryer

Thanks everybody for your first thoughts on this, esp dust on the heating elements and thermostat checks. I am fuming mad about messing up the year code. I was under the impression that the year was the first two digits after the period. Did they change this at some point to the first and third...

    De-linting a 1976 Sears Dryer

I was running my dryer last week and noticed it was running hot and was starting to give off that "too hot" smell so I stopped the unit and moved the load to another dryer. I've started to disassemble the cabinet but before I get too far, I wanted to ask about what should be checked / replaced...

Problems with Kitchen Aid Mixer K45SS, will not run right at lower speeds.

Hi Steve Thanks for the input on fixing this. Unfortunately, I have a backlog of small appliances that need work, so this is just the first of many. Almost all of them were inherited from aunts, etc. We finally cross paths on AutomaticWasher. I've known you for several years on...

Problems with Kitchen Aid Mixer K45SS, will not run right at lower speeds.

I have a Kitchen Aid mixer that I got from my Mother. It's a K45SS(WH) Serial WD2633456. 250W. The problem is with the lower speed settings. From the STIR to 6 setting the motor runs at speed 6. The faster speeds run correctly. I should point out that rarely, if set to STIR, the motor jumps...

    Salvo Detergent Commercials

My mom in the 60s only used Salvo one or twice and didn't like the product (didn't dissolve properly), but I thought they were fascinating. "Forbidden fruit" I guess.

    Whirlpool!!!!!!

Beautiful machine - quite a catch. It's almost heartwarming how many "sellers" hold on to these older machines for a good home. Several of my units came from people who didn't have the heart to throw such beautiful appliances out. Thanks also to John L. for his tips on washer care.

Advice on purchase of new Food Processor

Many thanks for your long and thoughtful answers. I wanted to thank all of you for your generous answers here. I should probably say that if I ask a question that I really have no idea about, I tend to wait until all postings come to and end since I really have nothing to contribute in a...

what would be your dream vintage portable dishwasher to own

Dream Dishwasher? I'd say a mid-60s Mobile Maid. We had one when I was a kid and I actually was rather fond of it. We had chores back then and mine was loading the dishwasher. Alas, when the kitchen was remodeled in 1970 we built a "garage" for it under a kitchen counter, so when the house was...

Help with vandalized piano key kenmore

Howdy Steven, I have a Kenmore Model 110.7204902G Serial C32317369. If this might help, I'd be happy to photo the back panel, but won't be able to get to it until mid=week. Bill

Will the recipe for this home brew version of "Shout" work?

Tom, what is the most effective pre-treatment on the market? Tom, You mentioned the efficacy of cleaning fluid in aerosol cans. I assume that was carbon tetra-chloride as the active agent. Do you recall about what time it was removed from the market?

Will the recipe for this home brew version of "Shout" work?

Thanks John I almost regret posting such an obvious question now, but the person who made the recommendation is a very good friend and she went as far as to buy a bottle of Downy for me ... so you see I'm going to get a follow up "How did it work?" question and I have to give a careful reply...

Will the recipe for this home brew version of "Shout" work?

Like everybody else here, I look to save money. A friend of mine recommended this home brew recipe to use as a laundry pre-wash spray instead of "Shout". Will it work? I have my doubts. 1/2 cup Downy mixed in enough warm water to refill empty "Shout" bottle.
