I have a late 60s, early 70s GE Toast-R-Oven with the pop-up "Flair" style door. I was toasting the other day when a BRIGHT light came out of the door glass and I saw that there was a dead short between the top front heating rod and the metal cabinet.

I unplugged it right away and found that the rod has now badly bowed out and can't be used. I have not yet attempted to take the unit apart because I wanted to settle a few questions:

Can these heating rods be removed from the cabinet? Are any still available and what would be the source/part number?

Thanks

Bill

Had the same model when I was in college in the late 1970s. Since peanut butter toast was a staple for students in those days, mine got quite a workout. Was great for grilled cheese sandwiches and pizza burgers, too.

Good luck with your quest for parts...although you might want to scour Salvation Army-type places for a "new" one.

I believe something like this happened to PhilR. He was lucky enough to find another one like his and he swapped the elements.  Have a look around local thrift stores and yard sales - they do turn up every so often.

Thanks for the input

Because of the age of the unit and the turmoil at GE, I was doubtful that an off the shelf replacement was available. I have some projects to do today, but I should be able to at least take the unit apart this week.

I'm anxious to keep this style of toaster oven. I've had several over the years, but only this one from the 60's actually toasted and cooked well in my opinion.

Hi Bill, hopefully you can find a replacement element, you may have to take it from another GETO. Take yours apart first to see if you can even easily replace the element, on later GETOs the element connections were welded in place and you had to use special connectors to replace them.

Also use caution with this GETO, this is the model that caused thousands of home fires, when something accidentally gets set on the start button the elements will never shut off and can easily set items above and nearby on fire, one of our customers got a whole new kitchen and their home remodeled after she brought groceries home and a bag got pressed against the start button and started a fire when she went back out of the house.

I would always unplug this GETO after ever use if you fix and keep it.
