    Utility Rooms

Ok, it's clear that I seldom leave Amsterdam ;) I remember my first geography lesson at school where the teacher said: "The Netherlands consist of Amsterdam and surroundings". Louis, I think that you are referring to the "bijkeuken"? How did your mother boil the laundry when she didn't want to...

    Utility Rooms

Here in the Netherlands, most people have their washer either in the kitchen or in the bathroom. I live in an apartment that was designed before the advent of washing machines and I have it in the bedroom as my kitchen and bathroom are too small. BTW I just discovered this video about living in...

    Energy efficient tumble dryers

As far as I know the main reasons for lack of interest in gas dryers are that they are more expensive to buy and that you need to install a gas supply and venting channel. Gas dryers were subsidised in the past but not anymore and now it is very difficult to find one which is a pity because they...

Out with the old, in with the new

"The old fridge's insulation had started to detoria So the insulation of a fridge has a limited lifetime? My fridge is running almost constantly too. That could explain it: the fridge is 28 years old. I must say that I have no idea about its electricity use when it was new. I didn't have one...

Out with the old, in with the new

How compares the energy consumption with the old fridge? I have an old one that is really wasteful, more than 2 kWh per day for a 50 cm wide table model! So I have been looking into the Liebherr range recently :) I now use (temporarily) an absorption fridge that is very small, but uses only...

Out with the old, in with the new

    What? No Liebherr?

Heineken beer in a Frigidaire .... frontloader

Several Heineken commercials focus on refrigerators filled with beer. The house in this commercial apparently lacks such an essential feature...

Heineken beer in a Frigidaire .... frontloader

I don't think that the "Frigidaire" name has any relevance in this commercial. Those men are just very creative as they have no idea what a washing machine is really for, but they can still put it to good use :) BTW Before I came to know this forum, I associated the name "Frigidaire" with...

    News from Whirlpool

I took this picture last May. It is the interior of a print shop in the centre of Amsterdam. It seems that they are still using the two phase 127 V system there. The green arrow points to a fuse box that is typical for this system (two fuses in a circuit). Note also that the fuses are what we...

    News from Whirlpool

I had the 127 V two hot wire system till the end of the 1990's. With this system I have had an electric shock three times so I can imagine what it feels like when touching a 110 V live wire (well, maybe not exactly because it was only 50 Hz). First I got a shock when I was a child and I kept my...

Plastic washer paddles in drums.. WHY?

Asko has plastic ribs. One of them can be removed to reveal an opening in the inner drum that can be used for removing objects that have accidentally landed in the outer drum. Never had any problems with plastic ribs nor that I have heard of someone else having problems with these.

    TV Listings from 10/14/83

Aha, so there is no nationwide television in the USA. Well, that's different from what I am accustomed to. Programme schedules are the same throughout the country with some local broadcasting stations that are listed separately.

    TV Listings from 10/14/83

OK, so the numbers in the black ellipses are channels. But here in the Netherlands, which is a very small country, we already needed several transmitters to cover the whole area and each transmitter used different channels to avoid interference. Thus the same programme was transmitted over...

    TV Listings from 10/14/83

Interesting to see an American TV guide. So the numbers in black ellipses are channels? And all programmes have a duration of 30 minutes or a multiple thereof? Never seen such a thing here.

    USB Powered Mini Microwave

I saw those articles too, but I still can't understand how you can heat up a cup of tea in 60 seconds with only a few Watts of available power.

    USB Powered Mini Microwave

I think that only the light inside is USB powered :)

    Extreme sudslock drama in Europe!!

Model number recycling... That's odd, just found that Miele used model number W400 recently for a completely different machine. http://www.herold-anders.de/angebot/angebote.html

    Extreme sudslock drama in Europe!!

Louis, I'll ask my mother again. The first one that you showed to me did look familiar. The model from 1975/76 can only be possible if it was sold already before that date. I know for sure that it is before 1975 because my neighbour (strange, there isn't a female version for this in English?)...

    Extreme sudslock drama in Europe!!

Louis, Yes, it was a Miele. They wouldn't buy anything else! I had my doubts about the spinning, but according to my mother it did.
