A&P and vinegar in the 1960s

I've been looking for... Bokar for ages. I've seen it online, but I keep hoping that I will find some in my travels - sort of the thrill of the hunt. Joe

A&P and vinegar in the 1960s

Yeah... ...when I was a kid, my parents bought Eight O'clock coffee, and had it ground at the checkout counter. The car always smelled so good after, because we had to shop at two other supermarkets every Wednesday evening. While not A&P related, those shopping trips often meant buying bread...

Are you seeing a noticeable increase in vintage goods for sale

Sadly, here in the boonies... ...estate sales seem to be few and far between. I wish I knew where folks dispose of estate items here - Goodwill? Local Goodwill stores are loaded with clothing, but household items are usually pretty junky (and dirty - are there people who live such filthy...

A&P and vinegar in the 1960s

More times than not, my father cashed his paycheck at the A&P service desk. I guess it was more convenient to cash a paycheck there and then do the grocery shopping than it was to stop at the bank - there were no drive through banking facilities here in town then. One other thing that I...

A&P and vinegar in the 1960s

Perhaps this should be posted in the "As The tub turns" section, but vinegar is used in cooking and cleaning... After posting in another thread about the state of detergent aisles here in the States and reminiscing a bit about the past, I had a flashback to something that I haven't thought...

Review: Detergent aisles of American supermarkets

An aside here... Along with xraytech, I too, use Austin's A-1 Bleach. I can remember seeing my mother use it way back in the early 1960s. It's from a Pittsburgh area company, and I like to support local business as much as possible. Here in the boonies, the three supermarkets pretty much...

    1950s General Electric canister

I have an earlier model... My parents were married in 1954, and I grew up with the pink and coral model.  I am assuming that since I can remember it "way back," my mother got the machine when she "went to housekeeping."   My machine, while the same model that my parents had, came from a lucky...

    Bad Laundry habits! help!

I second what appnut said. I use the same sorting and temperature technique, and always use a powdered detergent, usually Gain, with a scoop of an oxy bleach for undies, white sheets, and dishrags. I use warm and hot water washes, the last washes are always hot. No cold water washes here...

    Vintage Food Advertisements: Part Three

Relish tray on the table... Oh, I sure do remember when a relish tray was placed on the table. In my china closet, I have a cut glass relish plate that was my great grandmother's. Along with that, I also have her cut glass "goblet" (for lack of a better term), that my grandmother always...

    Line Drying, I Give Up..

I'm a hybrid... ...as I dry "on the line" and in the dryer every washday. I've got a number of acres of woods between me and the next farm, and the one house that I can see in the other direction is owned by folks who are rarely outdoors. Mowing and farming dust is never a problem here...

    Vintage Food Advertisements: Part Three

Coffee with meals... My parents were married in 1954, and during my years of growing up, coffee was made and served with the evening meal, and special meals such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. I wonder if it was a 1950s thing, or perhaps earlier - something my mother experienced when she was...

Estate sale find: 1977 GE Electric range in Avocado

Beautiful!!! I have such a warm spot for kitchen appliances that are avocado...comes from being a kid when avocado (and brown and orange) was in style. I drool when I look at that control panel! And - a real range light, something that looks so cool in the evening. I like to use my range's...

    Vintage GE Toaster Ovens?

My Toast-R-Oven... ...which does not get much use any more. I tend to use it for toasting thick slices of home made bread or warming a sticky bun. I inherited it, and it came without the little tray, so when needed, I use a bit of aluminum foil. After all of these years, it still works well...

    Cool Vintage Stove

I second what Lawrence said... I understand that here at the farm, my grandmother cooked with kerosene in the summer, and with the cook stove in the cold/cooler months. Electricity didn't arrive here until 1945, natural gas has been used for cooking and heating since the drilling of the wells...

EWWW!!! OMG, EWWW!! I'll never be the same again!!!

I forgot to mention... ...I've heard that placing moth balls around the foundation of the house discourages snakes. Don't know if it works or not, if it is an old wive's tale, but I thought that I would pass it on. Joe

EWWW!!! OMG, EWWW!! I'll never be the same again!!!

My house... ...an old farmhouse, sat vacant (with heat) for twenty years, before I did a lot of work in it and moved in in 2007. The cellar, a dug out affair and all mud, is not my favorite place to be. When I was cleaning out the basement early on, I found a number of molted black snake...

    Finally Royalty Enters My Home!

Aluminum... My father lived to see 83 years of age, and was sharp and with it to the end. Aluminum cookware was used at home - the Club Aluminum Dutch oven was used for tons of chili, Swiss steak, stews...I still have the piece, and use it without fear (though I shy away from cooking anything...

Stained Melmac Dinnerware / What the F&%# Clorox?!

Branchell Color-Flyte... ...was what I grew up with. My parents got their set in the mid 1950s, and save for holidays and special occasions, was used daily through 2006, when my father died. I still have the set, and use it occasionally. It is good, heavy Melmac, that while heavily used, is...

    Summer Winds...

It has been a good summer... ...for open windows here in the boonies. If I am counting correctly, I've only used the bedroom air conditioner (only air conditioner in the house) seven times this summer (would have been more, but was in South Dakota the week of the Fourth - folks here say that...
