Just in case the BeeHive comes back... in NJ

The Beehive never left NJ! I keep up my NJ hairdresser's license. My sister's house in Roxbury has a beauty parlor in it, with one of these contraption.

The Mystery of the Self-Righting Shirt

Peculiarality I have a 90s model General Electric washer, a step above BOL. Thought I was going cuckoo for the longest time. I, too, wash my clothes inside-out because of the horror of the psoriasis that curses me. Always amazed that the clothes come out "reversed". Clean, but not the way...

    Some sad news

Ben I am sincerely sorry for your dad's passing. Know that I will pray for his soul at Church. My sister and I went through a similar situation. Our father was found dead by a neighbor in their senile-citizen complex. He always had the place locked-up like Ft. Knox, it's amazing that the...

Help : name the car in the old local photo

I go with The '51 Merc. My old man had an early 50s DeSoto, the taillights were way smaller than that; ditto for an early 50s Chevy, my uncle had one. Hey, you car buffs. Do you ever see classic cars with curb feelers or static strips? Our neighbor in the 'hood had a '54 Olds with...

    Self-immolating Refigerators?

Old News Condenser-type refrigerators going back to the 60s had these warnings about "sharp objects". I had one until I joined the 20th Century in 1987. Best way to defrost in a hurry? Use your blow-dryer! Hot water is just too much mess. Those "sharp object" warnings are there for a...

Fighting the ALDI SoCal invasion . . . with disinformation perhaps?

Sometimes in SoFlo I'll stop by the Aldi's in Delray Beach if I need canned stuff. Their produce is pretty good, but meat selections are dismal. The quarter-in-the-cart deal is also annoying.

If This Don't Take All I Don't Know What Does

No Bleach During my years at THD, I always explained CAREFULLY the downside of using LCB in front-loaders (spider-wheel deterioration). "Oh, I MUST use bleach for my husband's shirts, kids underpants, sheets, etc." To myself I'd say, "See you in three years, doll". Sure enough, "That FL you...

    Brady Bunch House ?

Knots Landing Off-topic, but it always puzzled me that Mac (Kevin Dobson) and Karen (Michelle Lee) had a dishwasher prominent in the set but kitchen shots always showed them doing dishes by hand.

    Studebaker.

Postwar My father had one of the new models and drove it a long time (for business). His only complaint was that it wouldn't hold a wheel alignment. My uncle had one of the bullet-nose models. He drove it a long time then gave it to my aunt (his and dad's sister).

    Ordering Checks

30+ years telco experience As a customer service representative, not a day went by after the 1990s that I didn't get one (or two) frantic calls from customers. "OMG, there's twelve calls to Jamaica/Haiti/Mexico that I never made! The bank already deducted my phone bill from my account and now...

Done for now... Some renovations in the 'new' house

Looks Faboo! I love my ceramic tile, such a nice change from linoleum. No scrubbing and waxing. I'd be happier with hardwood in the bedrooms as opposed to pergo, but have to admit it's 100% easier to keep clean. Nice job by your tradesmen! And, a little late: Joyeux Paques!

You Know You're A Member of AW When...

When a pal or co-worker asks for advice on an appliance buy You investigate different models/brands that would probably work for their needs. Then they'll go to Sears and buy a Kenmore.

The buzzards are swarming now for Sears.

Dismal Sears here @ Boynton Beach Mall is one that is surely in a death rattle. I only go there to have watch batteries replaced (I collect novelty watches, so there's always a couple that need batteries). I think the watch concession is strictly a vendor operation, though they always have me...

    Nestor Martin cooker 1975

Wow! I've only ever seen one like this in the USA! It was a Magic Chef, bought new around 1989. This style is called a "slide-in" over here. Not all that popular except for "islands" or against fully-tiled walls/backsplashes. In my 8 years...

Things that stink up your house while cooking...

Microwave Popcorn! Nothing is more throat-gagging and stomach-turning! Every day in my office at the telco the gals would fire up bushels of that sh*t. I would run around with my can of Lysol, none ever got the hint. At my sister's medical office, m-wave popcorn is forbidden under threat of...

    FiestaWare Thanx!

To all for your kind suggestions. I used the Cerama-Brite stovetop cleaner on half my set. On the other half I used Barkeeper's Friend with a little dilution. Ran thru a light cycle on my dishwasher and they came out spotless! No stripping of glaze that I can see, and the stainless marks are...

    FiestaWare Help?

My 10-y.o. set is mostly white. A few red and grey pieces. Since I moved to SoFlo and now have a dishwasher, the white pieces show marks that can only be from flatware. Both my sets of table flatware are stainless. I never had this problem when I used to do dishes by hand. I've tried...

    Pre-Radar Transcontinental Airway System

December 16, 1960 To this day I don't know the answer. This day, during a snowstorm, a TWA Constellation and a United 707 collided in the sky over Staten Island, NY. The TWA plane landed in a field, all killed. The UA flight crashed into Park Slope, Brooklyn killing many on the ground by fire...
