Windows 8 - does anybody have it? If so - question

Oh, God, please help me I have not an idea how my computer works! Except that it does! It's a Dell with Microsoft XP installed, that's all I know. You folks with your techo-language and in-speak drive people like me crazy. Please stop. Please. Or at least label your posts "for the...

    I Cut The The Cord!

@ Ultramatic And it's STILL Anderson Field, not JFK or Idlewild! Thank you!

    Black Lead?

Believe it or not The Home Depot carried black stove polish for all the years I worked there. Worked well on my sister's gas grille and also a toy cast-iron stove she's had for 20+ years. Wear gloves and have plenty of discarded newspaper on hand!

    What I've Been Looking For.

I dunno The gal on the box looks more like Jayne Meadows to me (Mrs. Steve Allen, sister to Audrey Meadows of "Honeymooner's" fame). Maybe I'm just old...

    My new Vornado fan.

@ Whirlcool My aunt and uncle had that exact model in grey. They had it for as long as I can remember, probably from the 1940s. It would pull all the scorching July heat out of a 3rd floor tenement in East Orange, NJ in no time at all.

UK survey: single men don't change bed sheets

LaVerne & Shirley Right on cue! I always tape them on the one channel I get that still broadcasts them. For fans, you will remember that their obnoxious roomate slob neighbors Lenny & Squiggy would always bust-in unexpected with a loud "Hello!". This episode had them expecting to "get lucky"...

UK survey: single men don't change bed sheets

Garden State Comments This info has to be the most disgusting things I've ever read! MONTHS? WEEKS? Really, people. When I was a child we were poor and lived in a tenement. My OL changed sheets every week (or "sent them out" if the weather was nasty). If I was sick, my OL changed my...

    Typewriters....

Hilarious But I'm sure us old-school stenographers (120 wpm manual/140 wpm selectric) could have wiped-out this performer in a cocaine heartbeat!

    Just A Quick Thank You

Garden State Thanx From one Jersey kid to another. Thanx for all you do and all you've done.

    Do you remember this fan?

    W. W. Welch Was the mfr. of ours, which we had in the 1950s to cool our tenement living room in the 'hood. It was not so much designed to sit on as much to rest your feet on. It came with us to the 'burbs in 1960 and ended-up in our summer cottage in the 1970s. I don't know what happened to...

    Regina Electric Broom

Eureka Quick-Up Mine is a corded model I got when I worked at THD. Best purchase I ever made! Has a powered brush-roller and does a great job. I use it more than my Hoover Elite upright. I haven't seen a Regina Electric Broom since the 70s when they seemed all the rage in my parents'...

New line of appliances from GE

I'm a Boomer And I like it! The designer/spokesperson would have done better to have his tie knotted correctly, though. Selling appliances, more customers than not complained about electronic controls.

    POLL: Favorite Hardware Store?

As a former employee... I have to be true to the Orange Apron. When my store opened, we were of the new design that was less "vertical", brighter, and more sensibly laid out. I often had customers tell me that they bypassed other THD's to come to mine. Ladies, in particular, used to regularly...

Sears: The Most Hated Company in America?

Heritage My parents went to Sears for a lot of things. Appliances, furniture, clothing. I kind of migrated away from the store not for any particular reason. A year ago I went there to use their optometrist service. It seemed very professional and up-front with pricing. I got a pair of...

    Fridge Sizes

It may surprise you In all the years I worked selling appliances at THD, I learned that there is no conformity (by the government or anyone else) as to how cubic footage is to be measured for refrigerators/freezers. It's strictly based on what the manufacturer decides is "usable capacity"...

    Pyrex on Smoothtop

Garden State Caution Will prevail here. If I can't find one of those "star" things, I'm going to put Mom's 1950s Pyrex percolator in a safe place, until I return to sanity of gas cooking once again. Again, thanks to all who took the time.

Stuff Your Mother Never Made You

Product Alert! My friend worked as asst. mgr. for a supermarket here in the Garden State. Things to avoid: Uncle Ben's ANYTHING! This was the first stop for County Weights and Measures=ALWAYS short-weight! Next thing, those "fireplace logs" that are wax-infused. They deteriorate with shelf...

    Bluette

Bull-Dog Blue My dear aunt used this for whites having gone thru the Maytag wringer into the deep rinse-sink in the Youngstown. It was in a squat bottle almost like fountain pen ink, and the top was a twist-type like you still see on Parmesan cheese jars. The label had a fearsome-looking...
