    Hoover--What were they thinking?

Colors My mom has a brown-and-white Convertible with reddish accents on the bag. My grandmother had the exact same thing, so it must've been a common color scheme. My '60s Hoover Portable is beige and gray, definitely not my favorite colors, but it was 5 bucks. Interestingly enough, I swung by...

    Maytags!

My cousin and his wife recently moved into a new home. Their previous house came with a GE V16 washer from the '60s. The new house comes complete with a pair of center-timer Maytags hiding behind bi-fold doors in the kitchen! Both are white but are apparently "fraternal" twins; the washer has a...

    Woof!!!

Awww! A lab-collie mix sounds interesting. My mom has a Lhasa-poo (half Lhasa apso, half poodle), which was very cute until it went to the groomer and got all its fur shorn off.

I'm Still Going, But I Had To Stop and Think

I'm currently living with my mother in a rural mountainous region of PA, which means no public transportation and nothing within walking distance. The cheapest gasoline I can find is $3.18 for regular/self service. If you want full service it's $3.35 a gallon. Today I pumped $15 into my car and...

    What do you miss?

I grew up in the '80s and '90s, so unfortunately I missed out on most of the good stuff, but here goes: GE FilterFlo washers Mom's old kitchen appliances and Reese's peanut butter cup orange kitchen walls The Golden Girls Nancy Walker for Bounty Prism cable network Our big old wood-console...

    Speed Queen? on Ebay

Not a great picture, but it looks like a late '70s model, shortly before they changed to perforated tubs and back-swing lids.

    Old is not always better.

I actually like the old kitchen. It must've looked really great before it started resembling the inside of a Crisco can. (Anyway, you should see some of the places I've lived. *shudder* But they weren't $1300 per month!)

    Eaton's POD

Lovely Hotpoint set! But I'm not familiar with Eaton's. Where was it based? Is it still in business?

    Kitchen Photos

Absolutely stunning! If I had a kitchen like that I'd put my bed in the corner and just live there. Did you paint your knife block pink, or does it just look that way in the pics?

Heres the ultimate question, Snuggle or Downey?

I'm currently using a softener called CloWhite Fluffy, which I bought on a trip to New York two or three years ago. I was on one of those theater day trips, and while everyone else scampered off to be trendy new clothes, I went to the (now gone) 99-cent store on 42nd St. and got softener. I have...

Hands Up All Those Who Remember This

I remember Mr. Bubble from my early childhood ('80s). It's still around, but I haven't seen the powder form in a long time. Someone mentioned aerosol bath foam. I remember that, too. It came in colors and made the bathwater all murky, and it was very, very cold on your skin.

    A cornucopia of telephony

I have a Western Electric Sculptura (otherwise known as a Donut Phone) in brown and a cherry red Trimline, both with rotary dials. I love them dearly. The great thing about rotaries is that you don't have to push buttons for 20 minutes to get through a list of options. Just stay on the line and...

    Air Conditioners

I've got a GE Carry-Cool that I fished out of the neighbors' trash and while it generally works well, it couldn't do much against the 102-degree heat we had in PA this week. Running full blast, it got the temperature down to 79-80 in its immediate vicinity.

    Carbona bleach tablets

Has anyone tried Carbona chlorine bleach tablets? They look like an intersting throwback to the days when powdered bleach was commonplace. Can anybody tell me how effective they are before I spend my dollar?

    Washer & Dryer on Alf

I definitely remember the dryer, in that it had a drop-down door with a round window. I had no idea Norge made windowed dryers.

    powder det disappearing ...................

Snowing powders in PA I was at Weis today and saw a lot of powders: Tide, Ivory Snow, Gain, Bold, new Oxydol, Cheer, and Arm & Hammer. The Dollar Tree has Sun and Purex powders. Redner's has Xtra. I tried Fresh Start in 2001 when I found some at Big Lots, but I haven't seen it since.

    More vintage detergents for daddy!

Do you measure? On the subject of detergents, I'm curious: How many of you measure the proper amount and how many simply eyeball it? As a kid I remember my aunt using "Snap-Top" Tide (it had what looked like a little plastic washer lid that sealed to keep the stuff from solidifying) with a...
