Today's Topic: Boot Or No Boot?

Here's a funny thing... I've never used detergent with either phosphates or enzymes in it. Enzymes trigger skin allergies here, and phosphates are rightly banned. I've never, ever had any problems with mildew on the boot, even when I was rarely washing at over 40c and never used bleach, and...

Today's Topic: Boot Or No Boot?

Hotter water? AFAIK those WHs, like modern machines, could achieve temps no higher than about 60c. Better detergent? Absolutely incorrect. The detergents back then were crap - dirt couldn't be held in suspension properly, and they were chock full of phosphates!

    Commercial Speed Queen front loader

A hard-mount machine is a bad idea, your neighbours will hate you, and they really don't wash or rinse that well. The 27lb wash load - equating to 12.25kg - is nothing a mid-range soft-mount Miele Professional machine won't handle. The Miele will also wash, rinse and particularly spin a lot...

    G.E. wwa8172hdmwh new washer

Your English is fine! This would appear to be a late Filter-Flo model - should be a tough, reliable machine. You've got four main water level settings, plus one for a smaller basket that sits on the agitator when in use, plus five temperature settings - a cold wash and rinse, a warm wash (about...

New Maytag commercial top load washer video.

Plastic outer tub... eh... TBH I'd be more impressed with a relaunch of the 7500-series Neptune, just built tougher and with a redesigned door boot that drains down to the pump rather than accumulating moisture and mould. Update the electronics, connect it to a smartphone app, et voila. Proper...

    The White House...

Well, elsewhere on this forum, there's been enough discussion of politics. What I was reflecting on the other day, along with how funny it would be if Sheldon Whitehouse became President, simply for the amusement in the media having to use (or avoid) the term "the Whitehouse White House", was...

    P.O.D. 21/12/2017 - Bendix Gyromatic (c.1953?)

Kevin - many thanks! I'm afraid I just HAD to ignore your advice... morbid curiosity and all that! Glanced across some of the gay threads, now about to post on the subject of religion... but enough of that! So, do any of these Bendixes survive?

BUGGER! Typo on the date - should be 22! I'm not an upgraded member, can a moderator please edit the title?

    P.O.D. 21/12/2017 - Bendix Gyromatic (c.1953?)

Never seen one of these before, am I right in suggesting it's from circa 1953, just before the round-door "Gyramatic" (sic) was introduced? Was this a sprung soft-mount like the later machines? Known dimensions? Looks like the control panel is on the door, like the modern Hotpoint Aqualtis.

Why its better not to have a transmission

I'm not sure why everyone thought the old SQ TL was so good anyway, they were just rebadged old Amanas, not that reliable from what I've read, and the wash rollover was pretty poor. The new thing should at least be a bit more reliable, and it doesn't seem to wash any worse. You need a FL to wash...

You Know You're A Member of AW When...

You go back and watch the washer customer demonstration video a second time, because the first time you were concentrating on what the machines were doing, and the second time you're wanting to get more of a look at the svelte but curvy MILF in her low-cut top... ...or is that just me?! Seems...

    Sanitizing Laundry Without Chlorine Bleach

So - any advice on usage of vinegar or other natural sanitising (if not disinfecting) chemicals?

POD 12/18/17 Norge 21" portable washer & dryer

Hmm - a Norge Filter-Flo? I saw the handle on the front of the Norge portable and immediately assumed it must be a front-loader, but apparently not!

    Today's POD 12/16/17 Suds-Miser

I've been known to drain my Miele out into the Bosch next to it at the end of a wash cycle to save on hot water and detergent, but we're talking 95 degrees celsius, and I only do it if the water is fairly clean anyway (and usually the Bosch is dealing with really filthy stuff that will get a...

    Sanitizing Laundry Without Chlorine Bleach

I do have two cats, but surely if one keeps the pine oil away from them, there'd be no problem? I'd really appreciate advice on dosage quantities.

    Sanitizing Laundry Without Chlorine Bleach

Can one not just use a bit of pure undiluted pine oil in the wash? What about vinegar?

Today's Topic: Boot Or No Boot?

Necroposting again! Jetcone, I've seen something similar to what you describe (albeit not tilting-axis, just two different points of access) with Electrolux barrier machines - instead of hatches in two opposing sides of the machine, you have a conventional front-loader which is installed...

    Sanitizing Laundry Without Chlorine Bleach

Holy thread revival Batman! Quick question - if one was to use pine oil, or white vinegar, what quantity or concentration would be appropriate to use? My primary machine these days is a 2005 Miele W2240. For large loads, I tend to fill it on the Delicates or even Separate Rinse cycle to get a...

    FS: LHA7800 and LHI7801

The reality is that a decent modern FL will clean far better than the old Whirlpool TL, even if it doesn't last as long. I'd be inclined to keep the dryer in use, though! I'd probably hang onto them both and put a modern FL alongside them...

    POD 01/12/2017 - Bendix 30" Tumble Action soft-mount washer

Launderess - you might well ask! The one video (or, rather, series of short clips) I've found of the late-70s W459 (electronic control, rapid-advance timer) shows it doing as you describe - multiple rinses before the first spin. The older Mieles (410, 416, 420, 421) all appear to spin before...
