Appliance/Elevtronic status symbols by the decade

We lived briefly in a model home built in around 1960 or so, while Mom and Dad were having a house built. The model home was not especially great, but it was loaded with "upsell" options, like a sputnik chandelier, and a built-in "planter" filled with plastic greenery. The planter was faced in...

What The Hell Is Going On Here?

One cost benefit the Japanese manufacturers had over the Big 3 is that they outsourced much of their manufacturing of parts, whereas the Big 3 built most everything in-house. When the Big 3 figured this out, they began divesting themselves of their parts divisions and began outsourcing parts...

    NIB Finds

ISE Classic Supreme Here is the In-Sink-Erator Classic Supreme dishwasher I found NIB in eastern Ohio. The box wasn't in very good shape, but it was there. This dishwasher went to John / Combo52.

When you want more than just an oven

Those look a little like the ovens they use in grocery stores to roast chicken, except with rotisseries to rotate the chickens while they cook. I suppose it requires a fairly robust electrical service to power one of these ovens.

House full of original avocado appliances

Congrats! It all looks very 1970s-appropriate "eleganza." Many homes of that era were going for that Palace of Versailles ambiance.

    Pineapple Bratwurst Burgers

The bratwurst and pineapple burgers sound good! Hubby likes pineapple but not coconut, so these would be safe for me to serve.

Warning! Ebay and Auction Sniper users beware

I've had good luck using eSnipe for many years. From a buyer's perspective, there are many good reasons to use sniping services. You don't want to alert your competition that there is an item in which you are interested, as that will raise the price. You don't want to get into bidding wars...

Suggestions for cleaning ice maker bin

I'll give the baking-soda-and-water soak idea a try. This bin is big and clumsy. With all of the hidden areas, I know there are places I would never be able to reach with a scrub brush, without disassembling it. Thanks for the suggestions!

Suggestions for cleaning ice maker bin

I have the ice maker bin out of the freezer for cleaning, and the instructions are to hand-wash only, no dishwasher. This is the kind that has a rotating auger/spring type thing in the bottom to move ice cubes forward, and the front has a sealed-off area with the ice-crusher mechanism. The...

So, what do you choose not to do around the house? Why?

I don't do major electrical work or plumbing work. Minor jobs are no problem. The big jobs that are physically demanding are better left for the younger hired help. I did one roof tear-off, and never again. Oil changes are no problem as long as I can slide under the car without jacks or ramps...

    It lives!

I like the Mediterranean cabinetry. That look was so popular in the 1970s; it was everywhere. I think housewives were swept up in a collective fantasy of having a Latin Lover. Since that wasn't going to happen, the next best thing was to have your home decor look the part.

A time capsule opened and look what was inside...

There's a Country Squire enthusiast page on Facebook? I guess I should check it out. Big Ford brakes did get better when they went to front discs. My '70 with discs is pretty good at braking. My '66 full-size Mercury sedan with power drums all the way around, on the other hand, was a handful...

You can be sure... it sounds really good.

I understand that Modular Stereo Systems are all the rage with the Now Generation. You'll want to pop open a Pepsi and open a bag of those new-fangled Doritos chips while you enjoy listening to tunes on your new stereo.

    My New Dishwasher :)

Looks good! It's nice to have the warranty you get with a new dishwasher, just in case. Keep us posted how you like it after you've used it for awhile.

With this heat in Arizona, I'm trying to stay cool.

I remember these! That is a textured metallic finish on the front, correct? Very showy.

    The "regression" has taken place

Water here is plentiful and cheap, but modernizing the antique sewer lines in the city is not cheap, and that is what afflicts our bills. The EPA has sued the city over the sewer lines and part of the settlement was an agreement to modernize everything on a timetable. Our sewer rates are going...

AVOCADO RETRO KITCHEN APPLIANCES - $500 (East Berlin, PA)

I don't mind the floral wallpaper as an accent, like as it is lining the soffit above the cabinets. An entire wall of it, though, is a bit much. The rest of the kitchen is great.

How Wal-Mart May Give Detergent Overdosing — And Sales — A Boost

It is convenient using pods, as the detergent amount always seems to be just right. I've been giving Costco's Kirkland "Premium Laundry Detergent Pacs" a whirl, and so far I'm impressed. They contain a small amount of liquid detergent, but it cleans fine and no problem with suds. I like being...

So, basically it is upload one photo, then hit preview, then load another photo, then hit preview, and so on, until you are finished loading photos, then hit post. Unless, you are able to hold down the Shift key and select several at a time (sequentially), or hold down the Control key and...
