Just disconnect the vent completely and run a load to see if it makes a difference. This will elimanate the vent as a possible cause.

Definetly needs a 120V bulb. Try your local hardware store or Appliance parts distributor.

Now remove the two screws from the front of the top and raise the top to access the socket. I don't have a pic but I am sure someone here will.

If you push the top of the tub all the way to the left you will see a little window on the right side of the tub top. Assume one would have to remove the front to access the light socket for bulb replacement

To check the if the vent is at fault just temporarily disconnect it and run a load and see if it is still overheating.

One thing that commonly goes wrong with the old Maytag gas dryers is the pilot switch. They are NLA so it would be difficult to find one if it is bad on this one. I would think twice before buying the dryer at that price without testing the burner.

That boot looks like an automotive CV joint boot. I would Bet one would work as a replacement.

Why not rebuild it. They are relatively easy to do. Old maytags are prone to this problem so the next one could start leaking in short order.
