    Farewell.

Due to some extraordinarily hurtful and rude behavior in the DL forum, I am leaving AW. I will not, under any circumstances, be back. I wish all of you who have been friends to me here the very best. Sadly, Sandy

    Wagner Ware Magnalite

Ralph: Magnalite is good cookware; you did fine. It is aluminum, so the usual precautions apply: Don't leave high-acid or highly salted foods in it, because it will get pits in the cooking surface. Cooking really high-acid foods, like stewing tomatoes or making spaghetti sauce, is not...

    You're Welcome! Automatic Ephemera rules!

    Frigidaire dble range. i.d.?

Suggestion: What about going to Automatic Ephemera and buying/downloading the owner's manual for the range you're interested in? It's available at the link below. I've done this on appliances I've become interested in, and it's a great way to figure out whether you really want to live with a...

    Frigidaire dble range. i.d.?

Les: Your comment about the pushbuttons is another reason I prefer the late-'60s/early '70s GE models that I do; GE started transitioning to infinite rotary controls in that time frame. However, there are plenty of pushbutton GEs that would work very well with your pressure cooker; I refer...

    Tide Pods Kids' Safety Commercial:

It looks like P & G has been forced to do something about the many complaints about the safety of Tide Pods around children. It's an educational commercial, created by Saatchi and Saatchi. I saw it air twice today during the daytime. I felt it was a pretty good "soft sell" of the idea that...

Did you receive a Home Demonstration?

Probably Short-Lived: I can't imagine these were any huge sellers, because they would have had to be expensive. Given that a TOL 40-inch range was over $500 at the time, I would not be surprised if the list price here was $1000 or so. That would be equal to around $7400 today, which is a...

Vintage Early Stainless Steel KitchenAid Hobart Stand Mixer

I Have Been Campaigning.... ....For several years to get eBay to require the correct use of the term "Stainless Steel." Present-day sellers associate anything vaguely shiny-silvery with the current "stainless look" and think either the item must be stainless or that it's okay to call it that...

    Frigidaire dble range. i.d.?

Very Nice! Phil: I own two Toast-R-Ovens, both four-slice models. One is '70s with the chrome-framed door and the top browning feature, and the other is '80s with the all-glass door and the broiling feature. I love that blender! I've been looking for one in black, but no luck. Cory cadman...

DO YOUR PARENTS THINK YOU'RE NUTS BUYING THIS OLD STUFF?

I Don't Think.... ....That non-collectors "get" the economics of collecting at all. I remember years ago, when my mom passed on her Lady Kenmore 30-inch smooth-top to me. The range was an expensive one, but it had for several years been the recipient of Mom's Special Care Program, which...

    estate sale appliances

The Range Is.... ....A JM 73 Deluxe model; it's pictured in the 1971 full-line catalog. It was the least expensive Mark 27 range with P*7 self-cleaning that year. It has the three small/one large burner configuration, and pushbutton burner controls. It may have been a short-lived model; it's...

    Frigidaire dble range. i.d.?

Les: Your question has kind of a complicated answer, so bear with me here, okay? If one is talking about late-1940s/early-1950s ranges, I don't really have a preference between GE and Frigidaire; both companies made products with very similar features. And styling was roughly equivalent in...

    St. Charles Kitchen in Iowa

These Are: The same color St. Charles cabinets I had back in the '80s; the color is called "Pineapple." These are what were called "C-Line" cabinets - the plain all-steel cabinets. Greg, if these are late enough, there may be no rust in the undersink cabinet - St. Charles went to putting a...

DO YOUR PARENTS THINK YOU'RE NUTS BUYING THIS OLD STUFF?

What I Told Mine: Years ago, I got razzed one time too many about my liking for vintage stuff. The last straw came when family figured out that I was socializing with people who shared my interest and started wisecracking about "people with this weird obsession with old stuff." I finally...

    Sunbeam MixMaster Repair

One Way to Save Money: Since you have the stand and beaters and bowls, you might keep your eye out for an eBay deal where just the head is being offered, or perhaps a head and stand that are missing the other parts. Incomplete ones don't fetch much, meaning you could get what you need very...

    Re Westy stove..

Hans: I'm so sorry. Surface element switches are the Achilles heel of Westinghouse ranges, and I'm really sorry you had such bad luck first crack out of the box.

    Frigidaire dble range. i.d.?

Thanks! For the information. I don't know as much about Frigidaire ranges as I do some others, and this adds to my store of knowledge. I'm not as crazy about Frigidaires as some other brands, but if an RK-70 like the one I grew up with surfaced near me, there's no telling what my reaction...

    Sunbeam MixMaster Repair

Brainardcooper: You can replace that mixer about four times over for what it would cost you to have one overhauled. I do realize that an overhaul would bring one back to totally new specs, but finding a low-use example used would give you pretty much the same result for a lot less money.

    Mattress Shopping :(

Be Careful.... ....To check the thickness of the new mattress against that of the old. Mattresses are not the standard seven-inch depth of yore; they now come in all kinds of different thicknesses. If your new mattress is much thicker than the old, you may have to ditch all your old sheets...
