No cleaning ability?

Stick your hands down in an empty 1-18 or Rollermatic while it's going, and you could feel the shock waves in the water as the agitator does its thing. Mine cleans very well with very little HE detergent; better on my socks than the rented HE Duet on the "whitest whites" cycle, at least from my experience.

WASHETERIA: Only guessing here. In the UK it was a brand name for Frigi laundromats; in the states, it was regional slang, a blending of washer and cafeteria, the way a laundromat looks like one with the machines all lined up and serving. Up here, the Frigi Laundromats were called "Helpee Selfee," a comic twist on the traditional Chinese Laundry.
 
Hey Mike...there is really no need for a second rinse in these baby's. I like the way it sprays while spinning it feels like 2 min worth of spin spraying and then the descend and break and the water still running for the fill... pretty cool.
Maybe someone will have or know the spin rinse time.

And Mike I like the knits cycle on gentle for colors. It pulses about 3 to 4 min and then soaks for about the same time with less agitation for my dark colors reduces fading with (Cheer) or (Woolite Dark) and can be also be used as a soak cycle on the regular speed.. just leave the top open.

So here it is... I have a 1-18 at my brothers home in his garage in YELLO three cycle model don't have the model number but it will look like the one i have now in white which i love and very fortunate to have. The control panel is the same, only difference is... it has the window in the lid.
So it works great ..but has a slow leak in the tub.
So i would like to give it to you if you want it.. dont have room for more washers now so it has to GO! My brother is on my a## so think about it ok.
I mapped you, you are about six hours away lol.

He needs to go to a good home it is bored please REALLY think about .. it has been sitting in the corner of the garage coverd for three years.

The machine looks pretty good. it does have a small break at the bottom of the Jetcone, nothing really serious.. a clean break on the bottom of the agitator I can get pics later of the washer.

Chestermike... I have not seen or dont think the commercial units had a circle spray. the ones i saw filled in the front with the the jetcone you have in the literature only no cap has the open top.
Would love to go in launromats and watch them because they had a window of course. Very splashy.

Your offer is so generous, Darren, and in yellow (my favorite color--the sun) and glass-lidded. WOW!

And it's just so funny about the leak because that's all I've been dealing with, lately. It took me a year to get the oil bellows and the two bellows wrenches to fix the WO-65 2. And now I have a 56 Unimatic with TWO leaks. My father, who was a plumber, is up in heaven laughing at me for not learning enough from him when I had the chance.

What is your time frame, Buddy, and how bad is the leak. Is the leak in the tub itself, or is there a hole in the bellows? (if 1-18's have a bellows) Oops with a perforated tub a bellows hole probably wouldn't matter.

Still in awe of you when you quit posting out of respect for Gordon when his machines were taken.

Thanks for answering the question. The spray rinse lasts till the end of spin, then the clothes fall in. Awesome. MY brother had one in the 80's and still says it was the best machine he's ever seen, and wishes they were still made.
 
Wow!

That brought back memories seeing that Washeteria sign. As a child, our local shopping area had a Washeteria with rows of turquoise Frigidaires with the windows in the lids. My Mum used to take curtains, blankets and bedspreads etc there and apart from the machines themselves, my abiding memory of the place is the smell of the detergent, which was sold in those little boxes. The only one I remember now is Radiant.

The other memory is how gleaming everything was. The place always looked spotless. Years later they ripped all the machines out and replaced them with Rex FL but the Washeteria sign remained.

Darren, I'm really impressed with the plumbing in your laundry. Did you do it yourself? And, of course, those are some great looking machines; including the Electrolux peeking around the corner. LOL

That Jetamatic takes me back, I remember as a kid asking my nan to help me fill in the corner of the advertisment in a magazine to get more literature, however i think i thought at the time i would be getting the actual machine !!
I recently got the installation booklett, and as a bonus the seller found the instruction manual so chucked that in as well, haven't really looked through them yet, something to keep me occupied over the next few days.
We use to have Frigidaire washer's (jet's) in the local launderette, i always use to try and see it wash, but as soon as the lid opened it stopped..thank gawd for Youtube !!
Here's hoping for a new surge of machines in 2010..

Paul, I never got near enough to the machines to find out they stopped on opening the lid, our local was also a full hit turquoise with a mega self serv dry cleaning machine, I pulled my nans trolly round with her big velvet curtains in, when I first heard of dry cleaning as a kid I always thought it was a kind of Dry Powder / Sand they used...Lol

the picture with the tower Uni on the left and the bronze 1-18 on the right is Jon Jetcone's basement, or laundry parlor ;=> I don't know how he did it. I guess he is a whiz importing, storing , and retrieving photos.

Of, course I could be mistaken.

We had brilliant sunshine here yesterday; and all I thought of during my walk was sunny yellow glass-lidded 1-18's and a few nekkid dolls. :->

It would be great to see the jetamatic manuals. Still appreciating the blue jetamatic, Mikey.

LID SWITCHES: The 58 Tower Uni we had stopped all action when the lid was raised, and the lid switch could not be tricked. It was aweful. You could get a peak if you squatted down and peaked thru about a 2 inch opening. The 65 Rollermatic we had let you watch everything since the lid switch could be easily kept down by wedging a wad of wet tissue between it and the hinge. It was bliss.

dozens and dozens of them --I had a ton of bread--
and as they were hovering above my head
the angle of the sun hit them just right
and their bellies all turned a luminous yellow
dancing aloft waiting to catch my throws
it was amazing and I started laughing
yellow yellow everywhere every day YAY

You can leave the dolly be; it's just so funny the way she just "pops" out up there. The email is next, Santa Claus

Just thinking that maybe the over-all high performance of the 1-18 comes from that over-the-top spray rinse. What a rinse!
You said it wasn't as loud in person, so I'm wondering if there is a distinct sound muffled out when it switches from low to high spin the way the multimatics bong and whoosh.

It's so nice to see Frigidaire hallmarks stayed till the end
the cool vanes in the tub, esp, on the tub floor
rinse drama: instead of the overflow, an incredible jet spray

I've been watching this for over an hour now--better get off my butt and get busy, But, Ben you should start a separate thread for this so that everyone sees it.

I agree this is one of the best "wash-rinse-spin" videos I've seen. It really is SPECTACULAR. The long and clear close-ups of the turnover is awesome. I love it, you've set the new pace for "washerography". It's true everyone must see it, definitely start a separate thread.

MikeyD, different washer, I hope maybe you'll be able to make a video like this of your 1977 GE washer using the "1977-1980 Heavy Duty 18" (straight 4-vane) Activator. I hear it has great turnover even with a large, full load. No one seems to care for the GE's straight (8) and (4) vane agitators.

Once again, thanks for the perfect GM Frigidaire 1-18 video, the best yet.

have only recently seen the 8 vane (not in operation, just a pic) and not surprised because my experience with the 4 vane has not been stellar, always thinking it needed something more, so 4 more vanes should do it. Have you seen the 8 vane in operation? Exciting?

I don't use the 4 vane except to hold the mini-basket; otherwise the 3 ramper is only way to go. At least for me. But now you've got me wondering. I'll go down later and try the 4 vaner with fresh eyes and a new perspective. Thanks. And the next movie will show the comparison turnovers of the ramp vs. vane.

cool, I'll be looking forward to seeing that video. Spiral ramps like dual action agitator will always do a better job in turnover. Straight vanes are designed different but, if effective, will still turnover the washload at a slower pace.

lower water usage...

keep in mind with less water, there still need to be just enough water to surge thru the clothes. Also, don't forget about lint circulation.

Don't know which one I like the more: Mike's blue Jetamatics or Ben's 1-18 Oscar Winner. OR, Mellow Yellow in Daren's brother's basement.

SEAMUS, your " row of about a dozen machines in alternating pink, yellow and turquoise." sounds amazing. How much fun that must have been to see them.

HARRY, a few sentences on the 8 vane, please. Have you seen it operate? Didn't get a chance yet to review the performance of the 4 vane.

EVERYONE: Please do not overlook Ben's movie; it's a classic!

straight 8-vane...

hey Mikey, I first seen GE's 8-vane Heavy Duty 18 ACTIVATOR in action back in '77.

A friend of the family had a pushbutton Versatronic washer, peeped under the lid and saw the wash action and I was loved ever since.

The light-blue tub was really BIG because it was washing a quilted blanket on the 'medium' setting. Every back and forth stroke pulled the load down and under, a continual turnover. From what I've seen the best turnover action with the str8-vanes are from the medium to the extra high levels.

If there too little water, turnover will slow down. Key is to use enough water for the best rollover, not alot more.
