Thanks, Mister Michael, for figuring this out for us, but of course now the question is: if the rollermatics made it across Big Blue, why didn't the Unimatics, unless washing machine trade just wasn't up to speed yet and it took a while, at which point Unimatics were done. And thank you for the spectacular scans. And a pox on their rigged tests, always trying to undermine the lofty Frigidaires.

One of my earliest appliance memories....

Is Mum sitting me on top of the Jetaction Frigidaires our local Frigidaire equipped "Washeteria" was fitted with and letting me pour the powder down the centre of the agitator. I remember here closing the lid and putting the coins in the slider and pushing it in to start.

They had a row of about a dozen machines in alternating pank, yellow and turquoise.

They were replaced with a mixture of yellow "Tag" top loaders and Electrolux front loaders about 20 years ago- I remember them being stood out front for sale - from memory they were £25.....

If only you could turn back time.........

How can a washer be "very good" at washing but "poor" at stain removal?

Surely a machine that washes well removes stains, and a machine that removes stains washes well?

Very strange result.
 
Coin-Op Laundry names

I have always wondered if "Washeteria" was a trademarked name for Frigidaire, as "Laundromat" was for Westinghouse coin laundry locations. I call coin laundries "Washeterias", as that was what Mom, being from the deep south, always called them. Where is the one pictured located? Did they use that term for them in the UK? However, I don't remember any "Washeterias" around here, and of course Frigidaire was based in Dayton, OH while owned by GM. Anyone know?

Actually I used a rather more "pungent" expression, but to avoid upsetting delicate ears .....

Well I never knew that we had any pulsator models in this country and interesting that they were manufactured (or at least assembled) here too - well there is another one for the wanted list. Amusing too, I think, that the advertising blurb describes it as years ahead of its time, some 20 years or so after it had been launched in the US.

And as for setting the pattern for washing machines of the future, they got that wrong, in this country at least .....

All interesting stuff though

The jet circle spray rinse: It kicks in after the tub is drained and up to spin speed, right?

Is it also true that the spray continues through the entire spin, at least on some models. That would be the one I'd hope to find.

Hey Matt, Try not putting detergent in your machine on the next wash!!! Wash Action great but no Cleaning Ability...actually this result proves that they didnt use enough powder as they used 8oz of detergent at least in the similar Hotpoint TL....I wonder why?? do you think consumers actually picked Which up on that one?? perhaps us members should ask...LOl

Hi Al, did you have no Washeteria`s near you that had them?? granted though, I have never come across anyone who had one / used a domestic Frigidaire jetamatic!! another Holy Grail, as Seamus said last night it would be a free for all if that came up!!!

Mickey, are the commercial machines based on the 1-18`s with Jet circle Spray as well??? never got to see one close up or see them wash in the Launderette!!!
 
No cleaning ability?

Stick your hands down in an empty 1-18 or Rollermatic while it's going, and you could feel the shock waves in the water as the agitator does its thing. Mine cleans very well with very little HE detergent; better on my socks than the rented HE Duet on the "whitest whites" cycle, at least from my experience.

WASHETERIA: Only guessing here. In the UK it was a brand name for Frigi laundromats; in the states, it was regional slang, a blending of washer and cafeteria, the way a laundromat looks like one with the machines all lined up and serving. Up here, the Frigi Laundromats were called "Helpee Selfee," a comic twist on the traditional Chinese Laundry.
 
Hey Mike...there is really no need for a second rinse in these baby's. I like the way it sprays while spinning it feels like 2 min worth of spin spraying and then the descend and break and the water still running for the fill... pretty cool.
Maybe someone will have or know the spin rinse time.

And Mike I like the knits cycle on gentle for colors. It pulses about 3 to 4 min and then soaks for about the same time with less agitation for my dark colors reduces fading with (Cheer) or (Woolite Dark) and can be also be used as a soak cycle on the regular speed.. just leave the top open.

So here it is... I have a 1-18 at my brothers home in his garage in YELLO three cycle model don't have the model number but it will look like the one i have now in white which i love and very fortunate to have. The control panel is the same, only difference is... it has the window in the lid.
So it works great ..but has a slow leak in the tub.
So i would like to give it to you if you want it.. dont have room for more washers now so it has to GO! My brother is on my a## so think about it ok.

He needs to go to a good home it is bored please REALLY think about .. it has been sitting in the corner of the garage coverd for three years.

The machine looks pretty good. it does have a small break at the bottom of the Jetcone, nothing really serious.. a clean break on the bottom of the agitator I can get pics later of the washer.

Chestermike... I have not seen or dont think the commercial units had a circle spray. the ones i saw filled in the front with the the jetcone you have in the literature only no cap has the open top.
Would love to go in launromats and watch them because they had a window of course. Very splashy.

Your offer is so generous, Darren, and in yellow (my favorite color--the sun) and glass-lidded. WOW!

And it's just so funny about the leak because that's all I've been dealing with, lately. It took me a year to get the oil bellows and the two bellows wrenches to fix the WO-65 2. And now I have a 56 Unimatic with TWO leaks. My father, who was a plumber, is up in heaven laughing at me for not learning enough from him when I had the chance.

What is your time frame, Buddy, and how bad is the leak. Is the leak in the tub itself, or is there a hole in the bellows? (if 1-18's have a bellows) Oops with a perforated tub a bellows hole probably wouldn't matter.

Still in awe of you when you quit posting out of respect for Gordon when his machines were taken.

Thanks for answering the question. The spray rinse lasts till the end of spin, then the clothes fall in. Awesome. MY brother had one in the 80's and still says it was the best machine he's ever seen, and wishes they were still made.
 
Wow!

That brought back memories seeing that Washeteria sign. As a child, our local shopping area had a Washeteria with rows of turquoise Frigidaires with the windows in the lids. My Mum used to take curtains, blankets and bedspreads etc there and apart from the machines themselves, my abiding memory of the place is the smell of the detergent, which was sold in those little boxes. The only one I remember now is Radiant.

The other memory is how gleaming everything was. The place always looked spotless. Years later they ripped all the machines out and replaced them with Rex FL but the Washeteria sign remained.

Darren, I'm really impressed with the plumbing in your laundry. Did you do it yourself? And, of course, those are some great looking machines; including the Electrolux peeking around the corner. LOL

That Jetamatic takes me back, I remember as a kid asking my nan to help me fill in the corner of the advertisment in a magazine to get more literature, however i think i thought at the time i would be getting the actual machine !!
I recently got the installation booklett, and as a bonus the seller found the instruction manual so chucked that in as well, haven't really looked through them yet, something to keep me occupied over the next few days.
We use to have Frigidaire washer's (jet's) in the local launderette, i always use to try and see it wash, but as soon as the lid opened it stopped..thank gawd for Youtube !!
Here's hoping for a new surge of machines in 2010..
