I have a whirlpool refrigerator wrx986sihz00 it’s not cooling. The compressor is hot and the fan is running. What should I look for?

Thanks!

And if WP does not stand behind this, I would begin writing letters to the newspaper describing this and naming the dealership. I would write to Consumer's Union and call the consumer reporter at the local TV station. I would go on every social media outlet and describe your poor treatment. A friend told us decades ago about a brand new snowmobile that one day burst into flames. The dealer was not going to do anything. The manufacturer was not going to do anything. This was in a big winter resort area. So he rented a trailer, put the snowmobile on it with a BIG sign with large letters telling the story and his treatment by the dealer and the manufacturer. He only had to drive it around town for one day before he received calls from the maker and the seller and had a new one.

Be willing to negotiate

After working for two manufacturers, one with a large appliance presence, I learned a few things.
First: To find out truly what is wrong, most manufacturers are willing to give you a free EVALUATION (only) of the appliance by an authorized servicer to find out what is wrong. If an evaluation by an authorized servicer is already done, the manufacturer will take that info at face value. Hearsay will not work. A servicer must have visited the appliance and have the diagnosis on record.
Second: Most of the time the manufacturer will spot you the parts for free if you pay the labor if the warranty has expired fairly recently. This is a pretty good deal as a picture tube, compressor or LCD panel failure early in the life of the unit is pretty rare and the device will probably work for many years after repair.
Third: The manufacturer’s name is on the unit and the manufacturer’s reputation is at stake. I worked for two Japanese manufacturers. I have seen almost ridiculous extensions of warranties because “our name and reputation is on the unit”. In one case, a microwave oven, we did a ridiculous extension of warranty because, (as I remember) one Japanese manager put it, “ We designed the unit to last twenty years, the customer did not deserve this expensive of a repair this early. Fix it.”

Miele has a 1 year warranty, but then covers parts and labor on the sealed system through year 5 and parts from year 5 +1day - year 10. I'm sure it's because the sealed-system rarely fails- in 4 years with them I saw 1 sealed-system repair needed. I'm sure this is pretty true with most manufacturers.

As Paul said, social media is a huge help in getting something done when you hit a stone wall. If there were any social media complaints in my area, they were directed to me to address. I was always able to work it out with the customer but it usually involved us eating it or at least some of it.

It's threads like this that have me holding my breath over my 11 year old KA refrigerator which I absolutely love.  I just hope that parts are available for the foreseeable future because I know I'll not find a comparable replacement.  Since we got it at half price at the Western Appliance (RIP) warehouse, I'm willing to pay for major repairs to keep my beloved fridge running.

Years ago, I got a GE 'fridge from the original owner with a bad compressor. It was 5 years, and 2 months old, and was 2 months out of sealed system warranty. Dealer wouldn't do anything, he complained to GE, who told him the best they would do is sell him a compressor at cost, and he would have to pay installation.

So he told GE where they can shove their refrigerator, and bought a new Whirlpool.

Who makes a good brand ref anymore? Whirlpool used to be the leader for many, many years but I heard they changed their design a few years back. I wouldn't trust anything from Samsung, LG, GE (been there, done that), or Subzero. Not familiar with modern Frigidaire units.

Crossing fingers. We bought a KA counter-depth French-door unit maybe 8-9 years ago, and no issues so far. But, it's not the daily driver even though it's in the "main kitchen." Italians will understand this! The daily driver in the downstairs kitchen is an early 1960's turquoise GE Combination bottom mount that we've had for more than 10 years and has only needed a defrost timer (TY John L!). Before that, it was in daily service in the home of another AW.org member!

sounds like your whirlpool sxs

is the same age as my first one. Moved into this house Sept 04. All WP appliances. Still have the over the range oven......the electric self cleaning oven. The Fridge died almost 3 years ago. I think it was around 13 years old. It had to be serviced a few times but nothing major....I think once it was a capcitor and another time whatever solenoid that stops the water when you get water from the disepenser.....that developed a drip....the ice maker died like on it's 5th year. It didn't die actually, but the coating came off all over the ice, so we replaced it ourselves and that lasted until the fridge died...it was the compressor that failed.

This new one I have is around 3 years old and I expect about the same from it....it makes ice faster but it just feels cheaper to me than the previous one.

anyway - back when I got it I remember reading a review from a lady that said "don't get this unless you're house has AC" That she lived in a warm climate that didn't have AC and the fridge couldn't keep the temps cold enough.

I'm honestly not sure if there's any brand that makes a durable/reliable fridge anymore.

with the house...

when I bought it in 2014

Replaced the cold control 2 yrs ago and the start relay shortly before that.

Coming up on another birthday in Dec.

Still running well. I hope this doesn"t jinx it!
