In a long ago thread about vintage HVAC equipment, I posted a picture of the floor furnace in a friend's 1936 duplex (reprised below).   Last week, her tenant's identical furnace stopped functioning.  It sounded to me like a thermocouple issue, but the tech that came out replaced the original thermostat (as well?).

 

Knowing me as she does, my friend saved the thermostat and offered it to me.  I gladly accepted it.  When I turn the temperature dial, I hear a faint click that seems to indicate it still works.  Is there a way to check this without hooking it up to a heater, like maybe with a simple continuity tester?

That's Neat Looking!

I've never seen one like that. My ancestors just used those gas space heaters that caught so many people on fire. Thanks for saving it-
 
Yes, a continuity tester

Will tell you whether the thermostat is still cycling. There may be a resistor built in (heat anticipator), either adjustable or fixed, too. What a neat thing! I'm glad you got it.
