Hi all, as some of you may recall, I just recently found myself an old aluminum tub Maytag wringer washer. I finally got the new motor and installed it. yay! Let her run for a few minutes in "neutral", everything seemed to be going just fine. Then I slipped the gear shift lever down into "drive" and it started to agitate just fine! Nice long, relatively fast 180 degree strokes. However, after awhile, it started to make a knocking noise, and the strokes were only about 90 degrees and not smooth. I really really really hope this is a problem of the drive not fully engaging and NOT a problem of stripped gears in the transmission? What do you guys think? Am I gonna have to take the transmission apart?

You can have mine

it sits in the back of the garage; it works; never use it; it's just waiting patiently for a new home.

Hey Jed, I have no idea how that linkage hooks up between the lever and the transmission. I would examine that whole area first, otherwise yes you are gonna have to repair the transmission. Obviously you would need a new part or two which only could come from another good working machine. At that point you might as well just swap the whole transmission than trying to fix the old one.

Keep watching Minneapolis Craiglist, those old Gray Ghosts are a dime a dozen on there.

Let's see what the good book says...

If you will get me a model, I can and will post the breakdowns from the orig manuals I have and shed some light...

Here you go!

Hope you had a great 4th of July. I omitted the breakdowns on the wringer related stuff as I didn't think you'd need it. Let me know if you do.

HI tuthill

HI there, Great Maytag. You may want to check this out first. Make sure that the adgitator is all the way engaged over the post in the center of the tub. It the top of the post that turns, is rounded out or the inside of the adgitator is, then the stroke will not be the same as it should normally. Have fun. Gary
