This is a 1940's GE,and it is in perfect working order. This unit uses the same compessor as the GE monitor top fridge,so it may be from the early 1940's or perhaps even late 1930's.As one can see,it has the period deco styling to it.

Not much room inside this freezer! They were all like that back then however.

I have a quite similar GE frige. A neighbor gave it to me when they moved to the country to retire. They said it was from the 40's. It has seperate gray plastic letters spelling out "General Electric" with the GE logo in the middle. The freezer compartment looks quite similar. The exterior is in need of surface rust removal and painting, however, mainly on the top. It's on my list of things to do.

I'll see if I can get some photos of it for "compare and contrast".

PS-How can you tell if it's the same compressor used in the monitor top?

this unit runs great!

It only has one rack, however I am sure other racks could be cut down to fit this unit. I just marvelled at the solid construction of this charming old unit. They don't build them like this anymore!
The paint is in very presentable condition, although if it were mine,I would go for a repaint anyway.

If anyone is interested in purchasing this old General, please contact Gordon at Home Appliance in Fort Wayne. PH# 260-422-2788. He also has a very nice Whirlpool Imperial dryer for sale, and that was posted in the Imperial section on this web site.

Side view.Note the piano style hinge on that door. It runs the full length of the door! I just LOVE overbuilt stuff. That explains my love for *quality* vintage things!

Rick - I must say I am very impressed with the aesthetic appeal of that fridge, and also love the robustness of it too! The toe kick panel is my favorite part.

Looks like your friend is the kind of friend to have!

Rick,

Sorry for usurping your thread!

But I've been planning on posting some shots of this gem for a while now, and your post finally got me to dig out the digital.

I notice that my GE doesn't have the piano door hings, just the more common dual hinges. Also, the sides are contiguous with the top, instead of being bolted on as it appears that your sample is.

I think yours must be an earlier model.
