Thats a great bit of Americana memorabilia! Thanks for sharing it. I remember when my Mom was going to remarry in Nov.1970 I was making less than $50 a week and I wanted to get her a nice wedding gift. There was a houseware store on Kentucky St. in Petaluma, Calif. a few doors down from where I worked, Bee’s Houseware’s.

I purchased two sets of 4 place settings, 40 pieces each of Madeira pattern Franciscan Ware dishes as a wedding gift on layaway in June. Each set cost $50, for a total of $100, plus tax. Every week when I got paid I went into Bee’s and paid $7.50 on the layaway until they were paid for in time for her wedding in Nov. and they gift wrapped them for free!

This is the way folks bought things they didn’t have the full purchase price for in the days before credit cards. If worked just fine, in fact was better because there was no interest and the store owner could make sales they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to make.

BTW, the initials on the receipt you posted for payment in full on 10-20-47 look just like mine, same initials and just about identical handwriting, just a minor variation of the letter “F”.

My dad bought a wheelbarrow at Sears for the brand new home my parents bought in 1949, which had no landscaping whatsoever.  He made payments on layaway.  I don't remember the amount he paid, but it was ridiculously small even by 1980s standards.

Marshall's had layaway when they first opened in the '70s.  I don't think they do anymore.

Handwriting

I do not recognize the handwriting in the lower left corner, but the rest of the handwriting in this letter is that of my father. The handwriting never really changed.

Another bit of history preserved: When the time came to close the business and sell the building, I transferred the phone number to my cellphone. The number has been in continuous use in our family for 75+ years. With a few digits added, though.
