1950 Moffat Electric Stove - Help Needed!

Hello all,

I just acquired my first vintage stove, a 1950 Moffat electric with two ovens and a warming drawer.

It came out of the kitchen it had been installed in new and mostly works. I was wondering if anyone out there has a copy of a manual for this stove or a similar one. There are dials that we can’t figure out what to do with! Also wondering what it means when none of the burners emit any heat on their lowest setting but do so with higher settings? Is that a wiring issue, a knob issue, a fuse issue?

That's close to the one mom had though ours was a 4 burner and the left side was a warming oven only. There should be a toggle switch for the warming drawer, our switch was for the warming oven.  What other dials are your thinking... yours looks to have two timers.  IIRC the lights in the oven temp slider come on when it's heating and turn off when it reaches temp and it chimed when it reached temperature.  I can't see from the picture but what is that circular something between the two drawers..

There is actually only one timer... the right hand knob. The left hand one rotates to one of four settings - Oven, Non-Auto, Top Plate, etc. But the oven goes on without it being set to oven... so we can't think what it does.

The toggle switch for the warming drawer is on the left of the burner nobs, the plug is on the right side. The circular thing between the drawers is another mystery... it has a black arrow on it, has a small light bulb behind it and it appears to rotate... Any thoughts?

I'm stumped   LOL.. .  I wonder if the left oven can also be used as a warming oven, that may be one of those dial settings. ?

Got me! I was (and still am) hoping someone either has one and can enlighten me or knows where I can get my hands on a manual.

I'd love a wiring diagram too! The stove clearly had one glued to the back but it has long since been torn off...

Low heat on burners

Congratulations on saving this beauty!!   Moffat made some pretty cool stoves - I see you have the 'synchrochime' oven controls!

 

Do none of the burners work at low heat?  If so, there's probably a bad connection somewhere - the burners of this era would use 110v for lower heat settings and 220v for higher heat settings, so look for a bad connection possibly at the terminal block.   I've done a little work on a vintage one-oven Moffat for a friend of mine, but as we say here, C'est pas evident... I'll keep my eyes out for a manual - there's a town-wide garage sale in Ogden this coming weekend, so ya never know!

Well I have solved part of the mystery. The top left knob on the backsplash works with the automatic timer function. It's called the Select-o-matic! You turn it to Oven, Top Plate or Outlet, set the desired temperature on whichever you want to use on its temperature control/knob and it turn on and shut off automatically.

When you don't want to use the automatic timer function you turn the knob to Non-Auto and use it as you would a regular stove.

As for the connection, the burner terminals are pretty grimy so it's possible that with a cleaning of the connection it will work. Only problem is that it is now unplugged in a location with no access to a plug so can't plug it in to test...

I did get lucky and was able to pilfer a lot of spare parts from a stove of a similar year by the same maker that was just being thrown out.

WOW! Just WOW!

I'll bet the surface units have fixed heat switches. Like all Canadian electric ranges, I guess every heating element has fuse protection. Was it that clean when you got it? The one trim ring I can see up close looks like a late 50s Frigidaire.

The photos there are not my actual stove; just the same model. Mine needs a bit more cleaning before I can get decent shots. It was in a rental unit andnot cleaned as frequently as it should have been... The undersides of the trim rings are pretty rustyand the wires into the elements are generally frayed.

Any idea what wire I should be looking to get in order to rewire this beauty? The existing wire is red, black, yellow and blue (from what I can tell) fabric wrapped wire.

Moffat 1950!stove

I just acquired 1950 Moffat electric stove as the above photo . The middle burner isn’t working but that’s it . I have not plugged it in yet in the home but had it checked . Anyone here know where I can find a manual or better yet a place where they sell parts ? I live in Ontario
