Tappan ranges with the shadowbox backguard/control panel were, to me, among the most interestingly styled ranges ever built. These were available in both gas and electric. I think I remember an ad for one of these in electric in black, but I'm not sure.
Interesting note about switching to electric. Other than the couple of chips, this range looks to have been well maintained. From the way the area between the burners shines, you can be sure a stove mat was used all of the time.

My grandmother had a 30" version of this shadow-box Tappan. The clock was more compact but the styling and features are nearly the same. Hers did not have a window in the oven door.
