1957 GE 40" Range

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

That's the '57 "Stratoliner"...

next to the TOL, which was the "Liberator"... one'd think they were for bombing rather than cooking! GE also had an "Airliner" and "Stewardess" they definitely had some kinda plane thang goin' on!

Auto-Calrod

works great & also has Selecta-Coil (both coils or inner coil only), switch is partly visible at bottom left.

Has facilities for Meat Probe, Thermostat controlled Griddle, Timer controlled outlet, etc. One of the best electric ranges ever...in our opinion!

I Never:

Quite understood that brushed chrome panel on the side storage compartment door.

Usually, more exterior trim denotes a higher model series, not a lower one - the TOL Liberator didn't have this panel.

And the panel didn't match GE's refrigerator panel, which was embossed with a pattern, not plain brushed.

By itself, the Stratoliner is pretty, but taken along with other GE stuff, it's a bit strange.

Was that ribbed panel on the left compartment an option, on either the storage drawer, or a second oven, depending on the model?

That yellow range is totally beautiful... please don't tempt me!

The brushed chrome panels were only on GE appliances in 1957 (only TOL models at that).  This is an example of how the range was configured (no chrome panel on the 30" model, period).  The TOL refrigerator was the bottom-mount version and the freezer drawer front was the same brushed chrome.  On the dryer there was a brushed panel beneath the dryer door (covered the area from the bottom of the door to the toe space).  The TOL washer featured the same panel.

This beautiful yellow model is a 1958.

The Liberator & Stratoliner

did have the brushed panel for '57 as shown, I don't think it was even an option for '58. The more TOL models also had the chrome strips along the outer sides of front oven door openings. The 30" "Spacemaker" and 40" "Speedster", "Stratoliner", and "Liberator" were the only GE ranges with the floating "Island" backsplasher with lower ribbed glass insert that make these models look like something out of the Jetsons! Very dramtic look when placed against a darker wall for contrast.

We've been cooking on our yellow '58 for several years now and LOVE it... only reason for selling is to get a Pink '56 Hotpoint 40" with all these features plus ROTISSERIE and some other cool stuff that even the Lib doesn't have!

Anyone interested in the '58 Libby please eMail me: firesweep "at" verizon "dot" net.

You Learn Something New.....

....Every Day!

I have never seen a Liberator with the brushed chrome panel, only Stratoliners - this brochure material is the first I've seen of it. Thanks for showing me.

Also, all Combinations I've ever seen with the bright freezer door panel had an embossed panel, not brushed chrome - if memory serves, the pattern for '58 was the same as is on the console of that yellow Liberator that firedome shows - the star pattern. Our '58 Combination I grew up with was not the TOL with the bright panel; it was one model below - same machine, slightly smaller freezer, no bright panel. So again, thanks for furthering my education.
