Groove on another Philco ad

Countryford, I ripped off an eBay listing for that ad, it was probably Life, Look, Post, or Collier's. It's currently running, but I'm sure it's a little pricey <br
Sandy, I hope you find your radio. I don't have anything like that, but I have two Capeharts that I don't even know if they work, but they're cosmetically excellent. My Uncle Charles used to work for Philco, and unfortunately the only thing I ever saw or got hold of was a 20 lp set that went with console stereos. My parents brought a trunk load of records home from Philadelphia for me one year. I think Mom always regretted starting me on my path to ruin! Still buying records, have over 1000 easily.

There has been a beautiful Packard Bell console much like Roger's Philco over at my nearby Salvation Army. I put a post on ARF and nobody expressed interest. They were asking $120. These are big pieces and not everyone has room for them or the ability or connections to repair them, but it's good to see that some are being saved. <br
Roger and Justin, both of those are beautiful sets. They make my '50 Admiral 10" bakelite set look like the small potato it is, but I'd be willing to go larger if the right vintage color set came along.

Very cool and it's great that you're buddy was able to get it working again <br
I've got a Montgomery Wards "Airline" brand that's big like that, from about 1956. It was still in the home of the original owner.....my next door neighbor!

Not anybody in particular

It's one thing if these are irrepairable, but the remaining ones need to be saved intact, not repurposed, turned into fishtanks, or gutted and eBayed. I can really appreciate when someone says they don't have room for one when they really don't, but it's kind of annoying when someone has 2000 square feet of house with less furniture than I have, and says "I don't have room for it!"

I agree with you. Most of these old TVs can be repaired and shouldn't be tossed out. I would love to have some of the '50s TVs I've seen here on AW.org. The closest I have come is a 1954(?) Stromberg-Carlson that I found at an antique store last year. Some one had removed all of the guts except the speaker. The mahogany cabinet fits perfectly with my decor so I bought it and turned it into a liquor cabinet <br
Normally, the clocks are not on top of it, I have a crystal decanter and glasses to go there. The clocks have been packed away since the hurricane and I just set them out to make sure that they still function correctly.

Nice Philco !

Love that set! Philco sets are always my favorites
The picture on your's looks pretty nice. I am sure you will enjoy watching TV on it more than on a new set.

There Is Nothing Finer Than A Stromberg Carlson

My roommate has her grandmothers old Westinghouse tv cabinet in storage, and apologized to me three times for her father gutting it years back. I told her I didn't even know them at the time, and it didn't make any difference. Someone here has this Chinese cabinet model, I remember it from a couple of years ago.

I have a chinese stromberg carlson tv like the one in the ad. Only thing is at sometime the preivous owner didn't like the black and had it stripped down. The oriental facade around the pull knobs on the door is the only thing left that shows it was one of these models.

wasn't just the tvs that got gutted-back in the mid-'70
checking dumpsters, twice found mid-1930s radio chassi
freshly stripped out of their cabinets,in the trash
Tv chassis was more common though, one a westinghouse as
remember had very pretty knobs-they were chrome with a inse
ring that gave rainbow colors at different angles, like tha
decorative tape that you could buy in the '70s.

I had to laugh when I read that, because I recently bought a Lane bar cabinet that I'm turning into a TV cabinet. With minor modifications, it will be just right for holding a 20" LCD TV and a video recorder. It has doors, so it will be very much like having one of those old consoles.

Countryford with the Chinese Stromberg

I was pretty sure that was you, no doubt the owner stripped the lacquer finish off, but it also seems like it was offered in natural wood or lacquer. Magnavox offered walnut and black lacquer on tvs and hi fi consoles for years, in their Far Eastern Contemporary theme.
