1959 GE Filter Flo WA-650S

New to me Filter Flo (and my first one)! This popped up on one of the vintage appliance groups on Facebook, and it wasn’t far from my partner’s home in GA. I called and the shop owner was out, but didn’t feel comfortable with their associate doing a credit card transaction with their new system, so she was going to call me back when she was there to take the payment. In the meantime, despite have agreed to purchase, someone tried to offer more money and snipe the machine out from under me. Thankfully she declined and I picked it up about a month ago. I’d really like to have a matched set at some point, but for now this will get paired with the ‘63 V-12 dryer. And thanks to bajaespuma for his illustrations, as I was able to find pictures of the control panel when I was searching the archive.

Congrats! I seem to remember this machine being posted and wondered where it went. That’s a great find for your first filter flo.

OMG, I had the exact same model given to me. Worked fine but tub did not lock in place when washing, just tangled every thing . Gave it away again. Unless the tub was full, the filter-flo didnt work, just spit out.

What a beautiful machine!  Even has the original filter pan.  It looks well cared for.  Congratulations!

 

It was posted here on aw and I immediately tried to follow-up, but the shop was closed for the day.  When I called first thing in the morning I was told that you had tried to purchase it the afternoon before and you had first rights to the purchase.  I told the woman at the shop that if you didn't follow through with the purchase to please let me know.  I never heard back so I assumed you did get the washer.

 

We had this exact washer when we lived in Air Force housing from 1959 through 1963.

Glad you got it. And thank you for all the pictures, especially the ones with the rating plate (why in the world did GE decide to mount them upside down on the Solid Tub machines???) and the lid instructions.  These are dandy machines with interesting quirks.

Bottom line: they get the job done.

 

One warning: if you ever need/want to remove the top of the machine from the cabinet, do it very carefully. After you pop the two tension clips in the front, ease the top straight backwards an inch or two before levering it up or the flange underneath the cover can snap off the back of the brittle fill flume.

I remember the loud gurgling noise of the pump when the water saver was used. That instruction to fill it to the ridge on the agitator was so that the water that drained out of the sediment ejector hole under the agitator during agitation would not drain the tub of water during the wash period.
