1960s Vintage Magnavox Turntable and Storage TUBE - $200 (Greeneville, TN)

In looking for a Magnavox speaker(I have a 1957 294H Maggie with radio and phono, but no external speaker - just the capability to add it), I found this nice looking pair. Seller was willing to take it Greenville, SC. to bring it closer to my area, but I'd like a radio/phono model, and this is phono only, possibly 1957 as well..didn't get that info. I have the Super Magnasonic from 1957, with the plug in head shell on the tone arm, strictly mono with an external speaker jack. It has the cone legs with the brass feet and is in a "solid" mahogany cabinet. Mine is strictly phono. This particular one in the ad is stereo, and just in my opinion, is something I'd pay between $100 and $150 for. Are you in Magnavoxfriends and did you post the pictures? Beautiful set!

Magnavox set and Magnavoxfriends

It is a beautiful looking set. Yes. I posted the photo after I talked to the seller..was attracted to it because I want to add the external speaker. Since it's hard to find the right speaker, I might need to buy another Magnivox with its matching speaker; so that's why this pair attracted me. But it doesn't have the AM/FM tuner...so I decided not to go for it. I told him I would do something to help him try and sell it, but I don't know him, he hasn't done me any favors... I thought they were a nice set as well, and maybe someone else would like them. Like you said, the price would be more attractive in the 100-150 range. I bought my Maggie for $50. There's re-capping and not sure what else it needs...you know the story.

Your set is my set...I have the 294H /Cherry with AM/FM and cone legs/brass anklets(ha, my term) and has the internal/external/both speaker switch inside the phono cabinet area, as well as the usual (?) automatic/manual selector knob. I have my set posted on Magnavoxfriends. Photo attached is my '57 - nice to meet another Maggie lover.

I have a picture of my set I snitched off of Ebay, mine has no radio, and I paid $20 for it about 1987. I would like to get a matching speaker for it, even though mine is strictly monaural. It needs help, some of the people on the Magnavox site would be horrified to know I played it anyway. Most of the 1957 brochure is on their site, and they have the model number of the cabinet style that would match yours, even though yours is a stereo. You got yourself quite a bargain!

Here's an image from rjh0566's album on Magnavoxfriends. I haven't been able to flip it because I could only add it to my downloads. The S-36 model speaker/LP storage is the unit we'd need, with the appropriate leg option.

I just rotated it and gave it an old look.. wish it were in color, though. Yeah, that's it..
the S-36. Thanks - I did see that brochure on M-friends but haven't had time to look it over, along with some of the comments. Would be a dream come true to walk into a Magnavox dealership today....someone posted a photo of one in Ann Arbor, Mi(about 40 min from where I lived in Mich. ).

I have a James Dean biography movie made in 1957, there is a slightly overhead shot in the film, a large lighted Magnavox dealer in Los Angeles with part of the showroom visible, is in it! I hope some of those folks on the site can publish pics of their showrooms of Yesteryear.

Frozen in Time

MAGNAVOX - when the name was as big as Zenith, RCA, and Admiral...can't imagine walking in a store and seeing a full line of just one brand of "Television - Stereo - Radios - Tape Recorders" . Like a dream, long long gone. Michael's- was that the original dealer's name, I wonder? The tattered name tells it all:

Television = mostly commercials and sameness converges.
Stereo and Radios = the best years of radio are pretty much over - commercials and talk radio are the noise
Tape Recorders = ohyeah, lotta those being made..with all that new tape(sold on eBay now)

The name Magnavox

Latin for "Great Voice", originally came from Peter Jensen of Jensen Speaker fame, a Danish immigrant to Oakland CA who formed The Magnavox company to produce and market the first electrodynamic loudspeaker in 1917. In 1925 most of his stock in Magnavox was sold to a group of investors who continued the company to produce radios, and later on all other the products we know them for, then essentially all but killed off by the great Japanese transistorized electronics onslaught of the '70s. Now the Magnificent Magnavox is just a name from the mists of time.
