Flashback to a few years ago…spotted a posting on Facebook Marketplace for a coppertone 1965 Kenmore 70 matching set being given away free. I had already just picked up the early 70’s model 60 set so I really didn’t want more machines, but Combo52 texted pretty much saying “go get those you dummy!” I contacted the seller and she said they had already been spoken for. I pried a little and asked if she knew what the people getting them planned to do with them. She knew that it was a husband getting them for his wife who was really into retro looking stuff and they expected to just plug them in and use them. I explained that it was unlikely these were going to work and that I would restore them. They were her grandmothers who had just passed away and she had such fond memories of watching the washer growing up. I offered money if it would convince her to let me have them and restore them. For a small price she agreed. I have finally gotten around to doing the washer and happy to say it is up and running after a thorough transmission rebuild, new bearings, seals, and lots of bondo to repair the outer tub. It is really in pretty nice shape and I’m quite happy with how it’s turned out. The matching dryer will be next.

1965 Kenmore 70 Suds saver washer

Nice job, Jon this brings back such memories for me seeing that machine. My aunt bought the exact same machine in 1965 in turquoise with Suds Saver I used to use that machine all the time doing the family laundry for her.

The finishis in beautiful shape on that machine. I'm really glad you got those and restored them, it's easy to see why Kenmore and whirlpool far out sold any other washer in the United States you never had to make any excuses for the performance of one of these machines there was no linting problem , no sand or grit ever left no excessive wear problem for clothing, no tangling great rinsing, etc..

Definitely a great classic that you can actually use.

Great job Jon! It's nice that you have the matching set. What is that filter indicator light for on the right side of the console? Is that for the self-clean filter? I have never seen that before, guess it wasn't used for very long.

Photos 4, 5, and 6 are incomplete, as if the uploading of them was interrupted.

Kenmore70/Tom, the filtering indicator light is tied to the agitate solenoid.  It was common on both KM and WP models for a period of time when the self-clean filter was introduced.

Amazing job as always Jon. Those look great - nice to have the matching set and the washer looks as though its now brand new!

Do you need to do anything to the dryer or is it running well as it is?

Congrats!
