Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

OMG! I wish I had seen this sooner. My sister lives in Cordova. I could have popped right over with my brother-in-law's truck and got that baby!

Glenn that’s almost sad to think 2 of these machines were scrapped for a movie. Lol!

Eugene did you ever get yours running? I remember the post when you received it and said it had some issues.

Scraping Appliances

We have scraped at least 50 GE combos, 25 KM combos, over 1000 BD WP-KM washers, 1000 WP-KM DD washers, probably over 500 Mts and another 500 GE FF washers and DWs galore, and more other appliances than I care to think about.

It is part of life in the appliance business.

Yes I understand the scrapping as there is fixing to be a big event around my place. I hope to get rid of approximately 5000 pounds. As the washers and dryers have become more disposable I’ve focused more on other aspects of the service world and have mostly turned down the washer and dryer repairs.

Same here...

<span style="font-size: 14pt; color: #008000;">As a very young person working while in high school and college I saw tons of appliances, especially laundry, traded in and scrapped. This was a very large, high-volume store that's still there. 5 full-sized delivery vans busy 5 days a week. The section of the parking lot where they were stored had to be cleaned out every week. I like to think of this as the "golden age" of trade-ins. I attribute this to 3 developments in appliances...avocado green, harvest gold and shaded coppertone. Self-cleaning ovens helped. Washers & matching dryers came in regardless if one was still working perfectly. I wouldn't be surprised if both working laundry and refrigeration models were traded in just because people wanted to make a fashion statement, even in their garages. White, yellow, pink or turquoise meant you tried to keep your dinner guests out of the kitchen. At least with this store, they maintained a resale floor so not everything was scrapped. Reliable washers and dryers were rebuilt and sold thanks to a couple of low-paid part-time people like myself but I had nothing to complain about. I was having fun and getting paid for it. Unfortunately the more bells and whistles an appliance had the better the chance it would end up on the scrap truck. Any combination was dumped, and I saw many of them. A few of the other items the are "prized finds" today that were automatically trashed were GE wall refrigerators (lots of them from the Eichler home developments in the area), early Foodaramas and V-handle Philco fridges (the 2-ton door would occasionally not latch properly and fall on the owner's foot...ouch!).</span>

People were quite wasteful especially with cars then and now and it kind of is irritating when people have to get a new vehicle every couple of years and it’s not wise to get rid of something that still works. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Sean, there's always a market for used cars. It's beneficial to many people who want a nice newer car or truck, but can't afford a brand new vehicle. Unlike many newer junky appliances, motor vehicles under 15 years old are rarely scrapped unless wrecked or needing major repairs.

That combo looks like an awful lot of fun. Please keep us posted.

When I have my way I tend to value function over form, much to the annoyance of some people who used to be in my life. I also tend to keep things until they're irreparable or my needs change. Hell, I used to dye clothes that had faded but were still in other wise good condition.

Regarding changing appliances as a fashion statement (#30): That blows my mind. If I had that kind of discretionary time, energy, and money I would NOT be using it to replace perfectly good appliances.

Thanks! Maybe this will be the one where I learn to make videos so all can enjoy.

When I buy something major new I expect it to last the rest of my life. I know it won’t happen in most cases but that’s what I usually tell people. Most of what I own is “vintage.”
