Reminds me of the Maytag 906's that I stumbled upon and are now redcarpetdrew's.. so clean, they look barely used.

Both awesome machines -- you'll love the two-speed dryer and of course the "Super Wash" feature of the washer. Mine, as yours, still have the original stickers on the front touting those features. Enjoy!

Is there a bulb behind the control panel? I think turquoisedude has a nearly identical Canadian version of this set and his has the lighted panel I believe.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

marty, those turquoise whirlpools are BEEEEEAUTIFUL!!! and look to be in AMAZING condition with hardly any use. not that i am an expert, but from what it looks like, they are so shiney & smooth!!! MAN, the washer looks GRRRREAT!!!

and i was also wondering the same thing, is the control panel supposed to light up??? it looks like the timer cycle should be illuminated and if i were to guess, also the white panel where the "whirlpool" name is logo'd, looks like it should light up too??

BOY do those whirlpools look AWESOME!!!
please get back to us & let us know if these in fact, do have lighted control panels. i can't wait to find out and if so, see pictures of them with their lights on!!!

Lighted?

Well this set was not equipped with lights. I'm trying to find a suitable socket for the timers. However I did install the fluorescent lights. Here they are doing their thing.

I'm quite surprised to learn that there were no lights in this set. My cheaper 1965 Inglis Superb single speed washer and dryer have both two incandescent lights in their control panels, the dryer also has a drum light and an ozone light. So does Paul's very similar 2 speed 1966 Inglis Sterling. Paul's washer also has a tub light and an ozone light.

Neither of our washers or dryers have the red lights on their control panels. What are they for? Is the one on the washer for a "Filtering" self-clean filter? That's also a feature that both our washers lack (they have the brush-type filters).

I thought that each Inglis washer had it's equivalent Whirlpool model but maybe not exactly.

What I think is the same between Inglis and Whirlpool models of the mid-1960s is the shape of the control panels, the single speed washer models had the narrow style like mine and the two speed washers had the larger style like yours.

Filtering lights

Hi Phil,
The lights come on when it's filtering, I guess. I need to read the manual! You said there are two lights in the dial area? Where are they located? I nene to retrofit this as it would have come from whirlpool. Thanks!

Console light

Washerlover,

I used a 12" under counter light from a plumbing supply. It was a hard wire model, no built in switch. I hooked the wires up to the timer wires for now. I will install a switch later. The light only turns on when timer is operating. Only issue is while the washer is filling up with water, there is no power to timer. It was a temporary fit. I bolted the light itself to the back cover of the console.

Hi Marty,

I meant that your washer has a light (for "filtering") and that your dryer has a light (I can't tell what it's for but I'm sure you can tell us!) that neither mine or Paul's has. My washer and my dryer both use two incandescent lights in the rear panels but not for the dial area (and it's the same for Paul's machines). Paul's washer has a tub light and a germicidal lamp and both of our dryers have drum lights and germicidal lamps.

Phil, the "filtering" equivalent light on the dryer is to indicate when it's using the super tumble speed (or it could be the slower tumble speed0, but it's indicating one of the two tumble speeds.

Dial light

I wonder why they didn't use a light in the dial area? It would make it easier to read! So the console has no fluorescent light, only incandescent..... I got a fluorescent because I assumed that's what they used.
I would rather have been more factory correct, crap.

Mine is also a 66...

...and it has a fluorescent panel light. It seems that a fluorescent light was offered on the more deluxe models and the incandescent lights were used on the MOL units, at least this appears to be the case with the Canadian machines. It also has the tub light and UV lamp.

On mine the red light indicates the automatic filtering system is working.

Lighted Whirlpools

In the US usually only the TOL Mark-12 WPs got florescent console lights, but there may be an exception or two, the lights look great in your machines Marty, I would have done the same thing. Unfortunately they never did a lighted timer dial on this style machine which probably would have been more useful.

The little red neon Filtering light is wired to the agitator solenoid to showcase the wonderful Magic-Clean self-cleaning lint filer system, it is on whenever the agitator is agitating. The only time this light tells a fib is on Saver-saver models when the suds are being returned to the washer, as the light is on but NO filtering is taking place when the two-way valve is energized.

The red neon light on the dryer is on when the dryer is operating in the Super-Speed mode, SS uses the full 5600 watts of the heater and the blower speed is steeped up to about 3000 RPMs, on gentile speed you got 4600 watts and a blower speed of around 2000 RPMs. The gas version of this dryer was really fun because the BTUs were either 37,000 or 20,000 BTUs and these dryers were really fast on Super-Speed in gas.

and you're thinking the same as me "why didn't whirlpool put lights behind the time knobs"???
it looks like the control knobs should be light up from behind, like i think i've seen some sears dryers control knobs (i believe it was a 1969 dryer's control knob???). and i think even the turquoise pair of frigidaires had the lit up control knobs to that were recently offered for sale & sold, here in the group. i can't remember who had them for sale or who bought them. but the frigidaires were also turquoise machines that were beautiful too!

well, i just wanted to say, your lit up beauties look "OUTTA SIGHT"!!!

Hum, I wonder if there is a cam that is energized at all times if the timer is in an active cycle? I got lucky with my '61 Whirlpool - there was a pilot light behind the timer panel. I tapped into this cam for the added florescent light.

I believe 1960/1961 was the only year they did anything like this with this panel design. After this model, they went to a silk screened metal panel behind the timer dial and controls.

That is a beautiful console on the WP and I love how it must light up the room. Still my personal favorite is the 1961 model that has made its way around to several members of the group. I always loved how the lighting was positioned behind the marquis of that console. Too bad they never did that on any Kenmore models as that would have been superb.

Models that allow for lighting

Don't some of the hobbyists here add lights to their machines, even though this alters their original manufacture? I think many of these w &d's stand for a lighted dial, panel or whatever might be possible. I'm not an electrician, but I could add a light as Ben and Marty. Lighting just adds so much, imho.
